BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Freshman
Arden Morgans (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) scored her first collegiate goal and sophomore
Dana Sheply (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) stopped six shots in her first start of the season as the eighth-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team blanked visiting Slippery Rock University, 1-0, on Saturday evening at Steph Pettit Stadium. The Huskies improved to 5-1 overall on the season while The Rock dropped to 5-3 on the year. Bloomsburg also improved to 46-2 in the all-time series against Slippery Rock.
On a penalty corner for the Huskies in the 50th minute, freshman
Kristen Robinson (Annville, Pa./Palmyra Area) played the ball to the top of the circle where junior
Tesa Hoffman (Freeburg, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) fired a shot towards Slippery Rock netminder Maddie Murphy. Morgans, who had just checked into the game for the first time just minutes before, redirected the shot from Hoffman past Murphy and into the back of the net for her first collegiate marker. Hoffman picked up her team-leading fourth assist of the season while Robinson earned her first helper of the year.
That proved to be the only goal of the game despite some tense moments for the Huskies coming at the ends of both halves.
Slippery Rock held a slim 4-3 edge in shots during a scoreless first half but two of those attempts came in extra time when the visitors were awarded a penalty corner after the buzzer sounded. An initial attempt from Liz Wolfe was blocked but then she got her own rebound a fired a shot that Sheply was able to turn aside for the final play of the opening half. Then, like the first half, The Rock got an extra penalty corner at the end of regulation but Sheply made a diving stop at the side of the goal to thwart a scoring chance for Slippery Rock's Abby McKay and the Huskies were able to preserve the victory.
Sheply made her first start of the season and turned aside six shots for her second career shutout. Meanwhile, Murphy dropped to 5-3 on the season for Slippery Rock as she was credited with four saves. The Rock also had a defensive save when Wolfe stopped a shot from Hoffman just five minutes after the Huskies grabbed the lead.
Slippery Rock held a slim, 10-8, margin in shot attempts while the Huskies edged The Rock in penalty corners, 8-7.
Bloomsburg will play its first conference match of the season and will be looking to avenge its only loss of the season when it travels to Kutztown on Wednesday, October 3. Start time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
