MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's soccer team allowed a pair of goals in the span of 80 seconds in the opening six minutes of the match and could not recover as the Huskies suffered a 2-1 setback at Millersville University on Wednesday night. It marked the first loss of the young season for Bloomsburg, which dropped to 2-1 overall and 2-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings. The Marauders improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in league play.
Just 4:26 into the contest, Millerville's Talia Grynkiewicz scored her third goal of the season to give the Marauders a 1-0 lead. It marked the first goal of the season allowed by redshirt sophomore goalkeeper
Jenna Hawkins (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) and the Huskies' defense as it snapped a streak of 184:26 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal. Then, just 80 seconds later at 5:46, Kay Liebl beat Hawkins to extend the Millersville advantage to 2-0. It was Liebl's fourth goal of the early season.
Bloomsburg settled down from that point and got back into the match in the 21st minute when senior
Allie Barber (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) cut the lead in half at 2-1 with her first goal of the season. Senior
Erin Bielski (York, Pa./Century (Md.)) had the assist on Barber's goal which proved to be the final marker of the night for either team.
The Huskies mounted pressure late in the second half, getting shots on goal from redshirt senior
Bryce Watts (Etters, Pa./Red Land) and freshman
Nicole Varano (Paxinos, Pa./Mt. Carmel) in the 75th and 78th minutes, respectively. Then, in the 86th minute, Bloomsburg received the only corner kick opportunity of the match for either team and got a shot from sophomore
Maggie McDonald (Burke, Va./West Potomac) off the set piece. However, Millersville's Katia Mujica made the save on McDonald to preserve the lead and the Huskies could not muster another shot in the waning minutes.
Hawkins suffered her first loss of the season as she dropped to 2-1 overall. The redshirt sophomore was credited with three saves. Mujica improved to 3-0 on the season for the Marauders after also turning aside three shots. Millersville held a 9-5 advantage in shots on the night.
Bloomsburg will be back on the road on Saturday, September 8 when it travels to California University of Pennsylvania to battle against the Vulcans. Start time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
