Women's Volleyball Falls to Seton Hill in Five-Set Match Saturday

GREENSBURG, Pa. - After winning the first two sets, the Bloomsburg women's volleyball team was unable to close out the match and Seton Hill won three-straight sets for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) win, 3-2, Saturday afternoon. The Huskies fell to 6-13 for the year and 1-6 in the PSAC while the Griffins improved to 7-7 on the season and 3-3 in conference play.

Bloomsburg won 25-23 and 25-22 in the first two sets before the Griffins forced a fourth set with a 25-12 win in the third. Seton Hill won the fourth 25-8 and 15-7 in the deciding fifth set.

Seton Hill came out quick in the first set, taking a 4-1 lead but the Huskies cut the lead to 4-3 before eventually tying the set at 7-7 behind a kill from Mary Kate Mooney (Royersford, Pa./Pope John Paul II). The Griffins retook the lead, 10-8, but back-to-back kills from Mooney and Giza quickly tied the set again at 10-10. The Huskies kept the set close before taking the lead for the first time at 17-16 on an ace from Bryn Stek (Ambler, Pa./Upper Dublin). Mooney pushed the lead to 18-16 with another kill. Seton Hill climbed back and tied the match at 20-20 and took a 21-20 lead and a 23-22 lead before Giza tied the match at 23-23 with a kill and earned the Huskies' first set point with an ace. Olivia Pagano (Galeton, Pa./Galeton Area) finished out the set with a kill to give Bloomsburg the 25-23 win.

The Huskies used their momentum from the end of the first set to work a 7-1 lead in the beginning of the second set. The Griffins climbed their way back, however, as they rattled off six-straight points to tie the set at 10-10. Mooney kicked off a 4-0 run for the Huskies with yet another kill as Bloomsburg worked a 14-10 lead. After the Huskies pushed their lead to 17-12, the Griffins used another 6-0 run, this time to take the lead, 18-17. Bloomsburg got the lead back at 19-18 and again at 21-19 before Seton Hill tied the set at 21-21. The Huskies earned their first set point thanks to a block from Mia Nicholes (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) and Pagano that capped a 3-0 run. Mooney's kill ended the set at 25-22 in favor of Bloomsburg for the 2-0 lead in the match.

Seton Hill rebounded in the third set and worked a 5-1 lead to open play.  The Huskies got a point back on a service error, but Seton HIll controlled the play with four different runs of at least three unanswered points. Bloomsburg had its own 3-0 run behind a pair of kills from Sydney Buell (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and a Julia Burcin (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) service ace. Seton Hill closed out the set with a 3-1 run to win 25-12 and force a fourth game.

The Griffins ran away with the fourth set as they opened the game with a 7-0 run. Bloomsburg got a pair of points back but couldn't put together more than a two-point run and Seton Hill sealed the fourth set win with a 5-0 run to win 25-8.

In the fifth and deciding set, Seton Hill rattled off nine-straight points to lead 9-0 after the team's switched sides. A Buell kill got the Huskies on the board but once again they struggled putting together a run and Seton Hill ultimately won 15-7 to complete the comeback.

Giza led the Huskies with 11 kills in the match while Mooney finished with nine kills and 13 digs. Stek turned in a career-performance with 22 digs and 18 assists for her fourth double-double of the season. Alyssa Cianciulli (Royersford, Pa./Pope John Paul II) led the Huskies with 24 digs while Buell chipped in 12 assists.

The Huskies continue their road trip as they travel to Lock Haven on Tuesday, October 15 for a 7:00 p.m. PSAC contest in Lock Haven, Pa. The Bald Eagles enter the contest 6-11 and 0-7 in the PSAC after dropping a 3-0 match to Cal U on Saturday.
