EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - Defense and special teams accounted for all 22 points on Saturday afternoon as the Bloomsburg University football team earned a 22-17 victory at East Stroudsburg University in front of just over 2,100 fans at Eiler-Martin Stadium. The Huskies, who snapped a four-game losing skid, improved to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division standings while the Warriors dropped to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the Eastern Division.
The Huskies' defense swarmed the Warriors all afternoon, limiting East Stroudsburg to 17 points and just 279 yards of total offense while accounting for nine of the Huskies' 22 points. Junior
Aaron Trumino (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) had a fumble recovery in the endzone while junior
Alex Findura (Stockbridge, Ga./Woodland) posted a safety after a sack in the endzone. The Warriors entered Saturday's contest averaging nearly 36 points per game and just under 400 yards of total offense through the first six weeks of the season. Bloomsburg's special teams, meanwhile, posted the other 13 Bloomsburg points on the day - six on a pair of field goals from sophomore
Cameron Shollenberger (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area) and seven on an 87-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by redshirt sophomore
Chris Monaco (Pocono Pines, Pa./Pocono Mountain West).
East Stroudsburg scored the only points of the opening quarter as Jordan Walters booted a 35-yard field goal with 4:56 left in the first stanza to give the Warriors a 3-0 advantage. The kick capped off a 10-play, 51-yard drive that took 4:18 off the clock.
Bloomsburg got on the board early in the second quarter thanks to an East Stroudsburg miscue as a bad snap sailed over the head of quarterback Jake Cirillo and into the endzone. Trumino was there to fall on the ball for the Huskies as Bloomsburg took a 6-3 lead on the linebacker's second defensive touchdown of the season. Shollenberger added the point after to extend the margin to 7-3 with 13:31 left in the opening half.
Later in the second quarter, freshman
Quentin Gaskill (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) intercepted his first collegiate pass at the Bloomsburg 45 to end a Warrior drive and ultimately led to three more points. On the first play following the takeaway, redshirt freshman
Logan Leiby (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) hooked up with senior
Michael Allen (Oley, Pa./Fleetwood) on a 48-yard reception to set up first-and-goal from the East Stroudsburg seven. The Huskies, however, had to settle for a 33-yard field goal from Shollenberger to extend the margin to 10-3 with 5:06 left in the first half.
Neither team could generate any offense in the final minutes of the half, and the Huskies took a 10-3 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Following a three-and-out by the Warriors to start the second half, the Huskies put together their best drive of the afternoon as they went 73 yards on 12 plays. However, again, they had to settle for a 27-yard field goal from Shollenberger to push the advantage to 13-3 with 7:42 left in the third quarter.
East Stroudsburg answered on its ensuing possession as Gunner Anglovich found paydirt from 19 yards out to cap off an eight-play, 75-yard drive. Walters added the extra point to cut the Huskies' lead to 13-10 with 3:57 left in the third. Using the momentum from the touchdown, the Warriors recovered a surprise onside kick and were in business again at the East Stroudsburg 46 with an opportunity to tie or retake the lead. But, the Huskies' defense held firm as the Warriors had to settle for a 44-yard field goal attempt by Walters. However, he pulled the kick outside the left upright, and Bloomsburg kept its three-point advantage heading to the fourth quarter.
With 11:04 left in regulation, East Stroudsburg started a drive at its 11-yard line. Senior
Alex Annan (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) stopped Anglovich for a four-yard loss, and then Cirillo was sacked in the endzone by Findura for a safety which extended the Huskies' lead to 15-10 with 10:24 remaining. On the kickoff, Monaco muffed the kick and had to retrieve the ball at the Bloomsburg 13. Unfazed by the bobble, the redshirt sophomore sprinted 87 yards for his first collegiate kickoff return for a touchdown, which extended the lead to 22-10 with 10:09 left in the fourth. The score gave Bloomsburg nine points in 15 seconds.
The Warriors went three-and-out on their next possession and lost Cirillo to an injury after a sack from redshirt sophomore
Sir Michael Larsen (Philadelphia, Pa./Monsignor Bonner). But, the Huskies gave the ball right back when Leiby's pass intended for Allen was picked off at the East Stroudsburg 37, which gave the Warriors some life. Ben Moser led the hosts and eventually called his own number from six yards out to cut the Bloomsburg lead to 22-17, following Walters' extra point, with 5:16 left.
Bloomsburg went three-and-out on its possession, and East Stroudsburg had an opportunity to take the lead starting at its own 30 with 3:30 remaining. The Warriors got to their 47 before back-to-back five-yard penalties forced them to call a timeout needing to convert fourth-and-13. Moser completed a pass to Javier Buffalo for 18 yards, but another East Stroudsburg penalty on an ineligible player downfield eliminated the first down. On the fourth-and-18 play, Moser's pass fell incomplete, and the Huskies were able to run out the clock.
The Huskies finished with 243 yards of total offense - 125 on the ground and 118 through the air. Redshirt sophomore
Khalil Nelson (Philadelphia, Pa./Mastery Charter Thomas) led the ground attack with 86 yards on 20 carries while redshirt junior
Nyfease West (Philadelphia, Pa./North Penn) added 30 yards on 11 totes. Leiby was 9-of-25 passing for 118 yards and one interception. Allen, who became the sixth player in school history to record 2,000 receiving yards, finished with three catches for 68 yards while West caught three passes for 25 yards. East Stroudsburg had 279 yards of offense - 179 through the air and 100 on the ground. Devante Robinson led the Warriors with 44 yards on ten carries. Cirillo was 13-of-23 for 118 yards and one pick while Moser was 5-of-12 for 61 yards. Robinson also caught a team-high five passes for 27 yards.
Findura finished with five tackles, two-and-a-half sacks, two-and-a-half tackles for a loss, and a safety while Annan had five tackles, two tackles for a loss, and three pass breakups. Redshirt sophomore
Cameron Young (Elysburg, Pa./Southern Columbia) led with nine total tackles while junior
Khalif Hopkins-Bey (Philadelphia, Pa./Springfield Township) finished with a career-high seven stops. Andre Eldridge led East Stroudsburg with nine tackles.
Bloomsburg returns home next Saturday, October 26, for its annual Homecoming Weekend game at Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium. The Huskies will welcome Lock Haven University as their opponent with a 2:00 p.m. scheduled start time.
