Offense Explodes As Football Routs Lock Haven, 54-27, On Homecoming Saturday

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University football team exploded for 54 points and 547 yards of total offense - both season-highs - on Saturday afternoon as the Huskies doubled up visiting Lock Haven University, 54-27, at Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium in the annual Homecoming Weekend contest. The Huskies, who have now won two straight, improved to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division while the Bald Eagles dropped to 1-7 overall and 0-5 in the division.

The Huskies' 54 points on Saturday marked the most since a 54-14 victory at Cheyney on September 24, 2016, and the 547 yards of total offense were the most by a Bloomsburg team since recording 553 against West Chester on October 25, 2014.

Individually, redshirt freshman Logan Leiby (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) had the best game of his young collegiate career as he completed 16-of-19 passes for 272 yards and four touchdowns. His four touchdown passes equaled the amount of touchdown throws he had through the first seven weeks of the season combined. His 272 passing yards were the most by a Bloomsburg quarterback since Tim Kelly threw for 293 yards at Slippery Rock in the 2014 PSAC Championship game (November 15, 2014) while the four touchdown passes were the most since Kelly threw for four scores in a 56-10 victory over Lock Haven on September 28, 2013.

Redshirt freshman Carter Van Scyoc (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) completed the first three passes of his career on Saturday as he finished 3-of-3 for 29 yards. The duo combined for 301 passing yards on the day which marked the first time the Huskies threw for at least 300 yards in a game during the Paul Darragh era - a total of 77 games. In fact, the last time Bloomsburg had at least 300 passing yards in a game came in the 2010 PSAC Championship at Mercyhurst when the Huskies threw for 311 yards on November 13, 2010 - a string of 102 consecutive games.

The ground game was also working on Saturday as redshirt sophomore Khalil Nelson (Philadelphia, Pa./Mastery Charter Thomas) recorded the first 100-yard game of his collegiate career as he finished with 110 yards and one touchdown on 20 carries. It was the first 100-yard game by any Bloomsburg running back this season. Redshirt junior Nyfease West (Philadelphia, Pa./North Penn) added 53 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries while Leiby carried the ball six times for 38 yards. It was also the first time this season that the Huskies' quarterback was not sacked in a game.

Senior Michael Allen (Oley, Pa./Fleetwood) continued to quietly add to his sensational career numbers as he finished with eight catches for a career-high 164 yards and two touchdowns. He has moved into fourth place on the school's all-time list with 162 career receptions and needs 11 to pass Ron Lelko (1994-97) for third. His 2,239 career receiving yards ranks fifth in school history and is just 10 yards shy of passing Brahin Bilal (2004-07) for fourth. Finally, his two touchdowns on Saturday gave him 20 for his collegiate career.

Bloomsburg scored on eight of its ten possessions on Saturday with one non-scoring drive ending on an interception and the other running out the clock to end the game.

Nelson got the party started with a four-yard touchdown run to cap off a 10-play, 73-yard drive on the game's opening possession. Sophomore Cameron Shollenberger (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area) added the extra point to give the Huskies a 7-0 lead. Shollenberger extended the Bloomsburg advantage to 10-0 on the Huskies' next possession as he booted a 22-yard field goal through the uprights with 2:05 left in the opening quarter. On Lock Haven's ensuing drive, junior Alex Findura (Stockbridge, Ga./Woodland) - the reigning PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week - sacked Bald Eagle quarterback Kyle Knight and knocked the ball loose. Redshirt junior Koran Jordan (Reading, Pa./Conrad Weiser) recovered the fumble at the Lock Haven 25 and, one play later, Leiby found Allen up the right sideline for a 25-yard touchdown to extend the margin to 17-0 with 40 seconds left in the first stanza.

The lead ballooned to 24-0 when Leiby found senior TJ Tornetta (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) for a 43-yard touchdown reception with 11:52 remaining in the opening half. The touchdown was the first of Tornetta's collegiate career. Then, after another Lock Haven drive stalled, the Huskies started at their own 35 and worked a flea flicker to perfection as Leiby found Allen behind the Lock Haven defense and threw a perfect strike for a 65-yard touchdown connection. The 65-yarder was the longest play of the season for the Huskies and gave Bloomsburg a 31-0 lead with 8:24 left in the opening half.

Bloomsburg was not finished as West capped off the Huskies' next possession on a 27-yard scamper into the endzone with 2:43 left in the first half to extend the margin to 38-0 at halftime.

Lock Haven got on the board on the opening possession of the second half as Chantz Swartz found paydirt from three yards out to cut the Bloomsburg lead to 38-6 with 11:45 left in the third quarter. However, even when things went right for the Bald Eagles, it seemed to turn into a positive for the Huskies. Hunter Hess' point after attempt was blocked by junior Aaron Trumino (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) and then scooped up by redshirt freshman James Gines (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) who took it to the house, giving the Huskies a two-point point after return and a 40-6 advantage.

On the ensuing Bloomsburg drive, Leiby threw his fourth touchdown pass of the afternoon when he hooked up with redshirt junior tight end Kevin Vitti (Albrightsville, Pa./Jim Thorpe) on a 12-yard strike to give the Huskies a 47-6 lead with 5:05 left in the third quarter. It was Vitti's first reception of the season and the first touchdown catch of his collegiate career.

Swartz answered with his second rushing touchdown of the game - a six-yard run - and, this time, the point after try by Hess was true as the Bald Eagles cut the margin to 47-13 with 1:50 left in the third. West gave the Huskies their final points of the afternoon on a three-yard run which put Bloomsburg ahead 54-13 with 10:30 left in regulation. Lock Haven scored the final two touchdowns on the day as Knight hit Ahmir Edwards on a 35-yard touchdown pass for the first score and then, after the visitors recovered an onside kick, called his own number for a seven-yard touchdown run with 4:43 left for the final points of the day.

Swartz had a great afternoon for Lock Haven as he finished with 135 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 22 carries. Knight was 12-of-19 for 197 yards and one touchdown while Jalen Jackson was the leading receiver with five catches for 81 yards. All told, Bloomsburg outgained Lock Haven, 547-377 on the afternoon.

Senior Alex Annan (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) led the Huskies with seven total tackles while junior Nick Argento (York, Pa./Red Lion) and freshman Justin Resto (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) each had six total tackles and a sack. Findura had two tackles for a loss, two sacks, and a forced fumble. The junior now ranks fifth in the PSAC with 11 tackles for a loss and is tied for sixth in the league with five sacks. Alex Welch finished with a game-high 10 tackles to lead the Bald Eagles.

Bloomsburg will be back on the road next Saturday, November 2, for its final contest away from home in the 2019 season. The Huskies will square off against the Marauders of Millersville University at Biemesderfer Stadium beginning at 12:00 p.m.
