GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University field hockey team snapped its four-game skid and won its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match of the season as the Huskies downed Seton Hill, 2-0, Saturday afternoon. Bloomsburg improved to 4-10 on the year and 1-5 in the PSAC while the Griffins fell to 1-10 for the season and 0-6 in conference play.
The Huskies pushed their winning streak against the Griffins to 16 games and posted their 11
th shutout of Seton Hill in the all-time series.
After a scoreless first quarter for both teams, the Huskies broke the scoreless tie as senior
Tesa Hoffman (Freeburg, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) buried her first goal of the season at the 20:23 mark. Senior
Willow Perkins (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) took the penalty corner for the Huskies and sent the ball to Hoffman who blasted it into the back of the cage from the top of the circle.
Bloomsburg had to settle for the 1-0 advantage going into halftime as three Huskies shots were stopped and two were off target in the final minutes of the second quarter.
Neither team could find the back of the cage in the third quarter either, however it was not for lack of trying by the Huskies. Bloomsburg got five shots off, three were stopped by the goalie, one by a defensive player, and one hit the crossbar.
Bloomsburg had three penalty corners in the period as well. The Huskies defense did not allow a shot in the third to keep the Griffins off of the scoreboard.
The Huskies got an insurance goal early in the fourth quarter as sophomore
Foto Tsioles (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) took advantage of a cross in from the left side of the cage from Perkins and finished it off into an open net for the 2-0 lead and her seventh goal of the season.
The Huskies put four more shots on cage but were turned away and the defense allowed just one shot in the quarter that was saved by junior
Hannah Barnard (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) as the Huskies earned the 2-0 win over the Griffins.
Bloomsburg outshot the Griffins 24-2 on the day, including a 15-2 advantage in shots on goal. Barnard needed just two saves to post her first solo shutout of the season and improve to 1-3 in cage for the Huskies. Her counterpart from Seton Hill, Emma Jorgensen, made 12 saves and fell to 1-5 for the season.
Hoffman led the team with six shots, while junior
Cheyenne Ott (Mount Bethel, Pa./Bangor) added five.
Bloomsburg travels to Millersville on Tuesday looking to start a winning streak as the Huskies and Marauders hit the field at 6:00 p.m. in PSAC action. The Marauders enter the game with an 11-3 overall record and a 3-3 slate in conference play. Millersville defeated Slippery Rock, 6-0, Saturday afternoon.
