Barnard, Robinson Lifts Field Hockey At #3 Millersville In Double Overtime Thriller Tuesday

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Sophomore Kristen Robinson (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) could not have picked a better time for her first goal of the season as she scored with 2:35 left in double overtime to lift the Bloomsburg University field hockey team to a thrilling 1-0 victory at third-ranked Millersville University on Tuesday night at Biemesderfer Stadium. With the win, the Huskies improved to 5-10 overall and 2-5 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings while the Marauders dropped to 11-4 overall and 3-4 in the league standings.

Sophomore Callie Edwards (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) played the ball into the circle that caromed off of a Millersville defender and right to the stick of Robinson who - in one motion - fired a backhand sweep past Marauders' netminder Autumn Peters. It was Robinson's first goal of the year and her first marker since scoring at Seton Hill on September 15, 2018. With the victory, Bloomsburg has prevailed in three of the last four meetings against Millersville in the all-time series.

Before Robinson's game-winner, the story up to that point was the sensational performance from junior goalkeeper Hannah Barnard (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal).

After a slow first half for both teams during less than ideal weather conditions, Barnard stood on her head in the third and fourth quarters as well as the nearly full two overtime periods. All told, the junior turned aside 15 shots to preserve the victory as her record improved to 2-3 on the season. It tied for the third-highest single-game save total in the conference this season but marked the most saves in a game in a shutout performance in the league this year. She lowered her goals-against average to 1.05 and boosted her save percentage to a PSAC-best .883 on the year.

Barnard did have help midway through the third quarter as Robinson earned a defensive save on a shot taken by Kortlin Yetter.

The two teams put on a display late in the first overtime as each had golden opportunities to end the game earlier than it did. Following early pressure by Millersville, senior Willow Perkins (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) intercepted a pass attempt and had a 1-on-1 breakaway against Peters that the Millersville netminder was able to turn aside. The Marauders came right back, but Barnard made a tremendous sliding tackle on Millersville's leading scorer, Erica Tarsi, to keep the game scoreless. The hosts closed out the first overtime with a penalty corner opportunity, but Barnard was able to make a game-saving stop at the buzzer as she turned aside Hannah Brown right on the doorstep.

Millersville opened the second overtime with a shot from Tarsi, but the teams were unable to generate another shot on goal until Robinson's winner.

All told, the Marauders held a 27-6 advantage in shots, which included a 23-3 margin after the opening half. Millersville also maintained a 13-4 edge in penalty corners.

The Huskies find themselves back in the postseason picture as the Huskies, Marauders, and Crimson Hawks of IUP are within one game of each other for the final two playoff spots in the conference. The Huskies will look for their third consecutive victory when they host Slippery Rock University at Steph Pettit Stadium on Saturday, October 26, at noon during Homecoming Weekend. The Rock (4-11, 1-6 PSAC East) picked up their first conference win of the season on Tuesday with a 3-2 victory over Mercyhurst.
