BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University field hockey team pushed its winning streak to three games as the Huskies blanked Slippery Rock University, 3-0, Saturday afternoon during Bloomsburg's Homecoming weekend. With the win, the Huskies improved to 6-10 on the year and 3-5 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action and posted their third-straight shutout. The Rock fell to 4-12 on the year and 1-7 in the PSAC.
Â
After a scoreless first quarter for both teams, senior
Willow Perkins (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) got the scoring going as she netted her second goal of the season. After a shot from sophomore
Foto Tsioles (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) was saved by the Rock keeper, Hannah Nurse, Perkins collected the rebound and shot left to right into the back corner of the cage for the 1-0 lead at the 17:34 mark. Junior goalie
Hannah Barnard (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) made a stop at the 22:44 mark to keep SRU off of the board and Nurse stopped a shot from sophomore
Kristen Robinson (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) with less than three to play in the quarter to keep it a one-goal game at half time.
Â
The third quarter started out quietly for the Huskies on the offensive front but defensively, they got a save from Barnard and a defensive save from sophomore
Callie Edwards (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) in the first five minutes of play to keep the Rock scoreless. Three of the Huskies next shots went wide until Tsioles found the back of the cage herself with less than two minutes to play in the quarter. Tsioles ripped a shot from the outskirts of the circle thanks to an assist from freshman
Carlee Williams (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) to push the Bloomsburg lead to 2-0 at the end of the third.
Â
Just 2:33 into action in the final quarter, freshman
Sydney Derr (Fogelsville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) record her first career goal for Bloomsburg as she took a shot from the left of the circle under the diving goalie. Perkins lent a helper for Derr's goal with a pass from across the front of the cage.
Â
Freshman
Abby Shaffer (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) started the fourth quarter for the Huskies in cage and made her only save of the game, just under four minutes into action, to preserve the Bloomsburg shutout.
Â
Bloomsburg led in shots, 20-10 including an 11-7 advantage in shots on goal and took eight penalty corners to Slippery Rock's seven.
Â
Barnard earned the win to improve to 3-3 on the year in cage for the Huskies as she played 45 minutes and made five saves while Nurse took the loss to drop to 3-8 for the season as she made five saves.
Â
The Huskies hit the road for their final away game of the regular season as they travel to Mansfield, Pa. to take on Mansfield University at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 30.
