KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The 22nd-ranked Bloomsburg University women's soccer team won its sixth consecutive game on Wednesday night as it blanked Kutztown University, 2-0, at Keystone Field. The Huskies improved to 8-1 overall and 6-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division while the Golden Bears dropped to 3-4 overall 2-3 in divisional play.
Wednesday night's victory marked the first time since November 12, 2010, that the Huskies earned a win over the Golden Bears as Bloomsburg snapped a nine-match winless streak in the all-time series. That victory came in the opening round of the NCAA Division II playoffs. The teams played to stalemates in each of the last two seasons following seven consecutive wins by Kutztown over Bloomsburg.
Sophomore
Nicole Varano (Mt. Carmel, Pa./Mt. Carmel) wasted little time getting Bloomsburg on the scoreboard as she knocked home her team-leading fifth goal of the season off of a corner kick opportunity taken by junior
Lauren Hoelke (Blackwood, N.J./Highland Regional) just 1:37 into the match. Varano has now scored in back-to-back contests while Hoelke picked up her team-leading fourth assist of the year.
The score remained a 1-0 Bloomsburg advantage until junior
Maggie McDonald (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) collected a rebound and beat Kutztown netminder Jenna Bracken in the 69th minute for her third goal of the season and to provide the Huskies with some insurance. Like Varano, McDonald has now scored in consecutive matches.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper
Jenna Hawkins (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) and the Bloomsburg defensive unit did the rest as the Huskies picked up their sixth shutout in nine contests this season. Hawkins stopped two shots in the victory to improve to 8-1 on the season. It was her fifth shutout of the year giving her 24 for her collegiate career as she trails only Amy Linn (1992-95), who finished with 27, and Frances Nicoletti (2008-11), who totaled 26, on the school's all-time list.
Bloomsburg held a 17-9 advantage in shots and a 10-5 margin in corner kicks on the night. Bracken dropped to 3-4 on the season as she stopped five Bloomsburg shot attempts in a losing effort.
