#21 Women's Soccer Blanks #8 West Chester, 2-0, In Wednesday Showdown

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The 21st-ranked Bloomsburg University women's soccer team pushed its winning streak to seven games as the Huskies knocked off #8 West Chester University, 2-0, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division showdown, Wednesday afternoon. The Huskies improved to 9-1 overall and 7-1 in divisional play while the Golden Rams dropped to 7-2 and 6-2 in the PSAC East.

The victory on Wednesday marked the second-straight regular season win for the Huskies over West Chester after the two teams played to a 1-1 tie in the PSAC semifinals last year and Bloomsburg advancing to the conference title game by virtue of a 2-0 advantage in penalty kicks.

Junior Natalie Holmes (Laurel, Md./Archbishop Spalding) got the scoring going early as she curled a corner kick into the top left-hand corner of the net for her third goal of the year at the 4:33 mark.

The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Huskies until the 26th minute when junior Lauren Hoelke (Blackwood, N.J./Highland Regional) converted a penalty kick after Bloomsburg drew a foul inside the 18-yard box.

The Bloomsburg defensive unit posted another solid performance in front of redshirt junior goalkeeper Jenna Hawkins (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) as the Golden Rams were not able to get a shot on target off in the first half. All three attempts by West Chester went wide in the first 45 minutes.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the second half. Hawkins stopped the first shot that came her way in the 68th minute and West Chester goalie Brooke Myers made her only stop of the afternoon on a shot from Hoelke with 17 minutes left to play. Holmes nearly had her second goal of the contest but her shot ricocheted off of the crossbar.

Hawkins needed just two saves in improve to 9-1 on the year and post her 25th shutout of her career as she inches closer to Amy Linn (1992-95), who finished with 27, and Frances Nicoletti (2008-11), who totaled 26, on the school's all-time list.

Bloomsburg held a narrow 10-8 advantage in shots while West Chester led in corners, 6-4. Myers suffered the loss in net for West Chester as she drops to 7-2 on the year.

The Huskies hit the road this Saturday as Bloomsburg travels to the sixth-ranked Millersville University for a PSAC East showdown with the Marauders at 3:00 pm in Millersville, Pa.
