Field Hockey Drops 3-2 Overtime Decision Against Kutztown Wednesday Afternoon

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University field hockey team scored the first two goals of the game on Wednesday afternoon but could not hang on as the fifth-ranked Golden Bears of Kutztown University rallied for a 3-2 overtime victory over the Huskies at Steph Pettit Stadium. Bloomsburg dropped to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) while Kutztown improved to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in league play.

Sophomore Callie Edwards (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) started the scoring for the Huskies when she notched her first goal of the season - second of her career - after Bloomsburg was awarded a penalty stroke. Kutztown goalkeeper Katie Dotterweich guessed left and Edwards went high and to the right as the hosts took a 1-0 advantage just 5:35 into the match. The Huskies extended the lead to 2-0 in the 20th minute when sophomore Foto Tsioles (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) tipped home her team-leading fifth goal of the year off of assists from junior Cheyenne Ott (Mount Bethel, Pa./Bangor) and sophomore Arden Morgans (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood).

Kutztown, however, grabbed the momentum just before halftime as it capitalized on a penalty corner opportunity with 24 seconds left in the opening 30 minutes. Rachel Dusman fired a shot from inside the circle off of the insert from Leigh Roselli to get the Golden Bears on the scoreboard.

After a scoreless third period, Kutztown's leading scorer Kyra Wozniak tied the contest at 2-2 in the 49th minute when she intercepted a clearing attempt by the Huskies and beat freshman goalkeeper Abby Shaffer (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) with a slapshot for her eighth goal of the season.

Neither team could crack the scoreboard through the end of regulation but the Golden Bears wasted little time in overtime as Dusman notched her second of the game just 30 seconds into the extra session to complete the comeback. Shaffer made the initial save on a shot from Wozniak but Dusman was there to corral the rebound and flip a shot over the head of the freshman goalkeeper and into the back of the cage.

Kutztown held a 20-5 shot advantage including a 15-1 margin over the final three quarters and the overtime period. The Golden Bears also had 11 penalty corner opportunities while the Huskies did not have a chance. Shaffer turned aside nine shots in the losing effort as she dropped to 2-5 overall in her first season with the Huskies. It marked the third time in seven starts that she has stopped at least nine shots in a game. Meanwhile, Dotterweich was credited with two saves for Kutztown as she improved to 7-2 on the year. Both teams also had a defensive save - Roselli for Kutztown and senior Tesa Hoffman (Freeburg, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) for the Huskies.

Bloomsburg heads to North Carolina for a pair of non-conference contests in Charlotte. The Huskies will play at Queens University on Friday, October 4, at 4:00 p.m. and then will square off against Limestone, also at Queens, on Sunday, October 6, at 11:00 a.m.
