Morgans' Game-Winner Propels Field Hockey To 2-1 Double Overtime Win At Queens (NC) Friday

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Sophomore Arden Morgans (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) scored her first goal of the season with 3:28 left in double overtime to lift the Bloomsburg University field hockey team to a 2-1 victory at Queens University of Charlotte on Friday at Bessant Field. The Huskies, who remained perfect (4-0) in the all-time series against the Royals, improved to 3-6 overall on the season while Queens dropped to 5-4 on the year.

Morgans, who scored two goals in her first season with the Huskies a year ago, couldn't have picked a better time to record her first goal of her sophomore campaign when she collected a pass from junior Alyssa Broadt (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) and beat Queens' goalkeeper Avian Thompson to give Bloomsburg its third victory of the season. The assist by Broadt was the first of her collegiate career.

Bloomsburg struck first when redshirt freshman Makayla Barrow poked home a rebound past Thompson with 2:14 left in the first quarter to give the Huskies a 1-0 advantage. The goal was the first of Barrow's collegiate career. The Royals finally solved freshman goalkeeper Abby Shaffer (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) with 1:04 left in the third quarter when Maya Forbes scored her third goal of the year.

Shaffer stopped five shots to improve to 3-5 overall on the season. The freshman did get some help from sophomore defender Ashley Maxwell (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) who was credited with a pair of defensive saves on the afternoon - one in the third quarter and one in the fourth. Meanwhile, Thompson turned aside six Bloomsburg shots in a losing effort as she saw her record even at 4-4 on the year. The Huskies held a 15-10 edge in shots and owned a slim 7-6 edge in penalty corners.

The Huskies will remain in Charlotte as they will square off against Limestone on Sunday morning, October 6, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Queens' Bessant Field. Bloomsburg returns home on Tuesday, October 8, to entertain West Chester in a conference matchup at Steph Pettit Stadium beginning at 4:00 p.m. The game will also serve as Faculty Appreciation Day for the Huskies.
