CHARLOTTE, N.C. - For the third consecutive game, the Bloomsburg University field hockey team needed overtime on Sunday afternoon to determine its fate. And, unfortunately for the Huskies, Limestone College scored just under six minutes into the extra session to send Bloomsburg to a 2-1 loss at Bessant Field on the campus of Queens University. The Huskies dropped to 3-7 overall and dropped to 1-3 in games decided in overtime this season. The Saints, meanwhile, improved to 7-3 on the year. It marked the final non-conference game of the season for Bloomsburg.
The Saints acted quickly to get on the board as they took a 1-0 lead just under four minutes into the contest when Kate Remley beat freshman goalkeeper
Abby Shaffer (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) who was making her ninth consecutive start in goal. Bloomsburg retaliated and knotted the game at 1-1 early in the second quarter when junior
Emily Alker (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) scored off a pass from sophomore
Callie Edwards (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) during a penalty corner opportunity. Alker's second goal of the season marks a new career-high for the forward who entered the season with one goal in each of her first two years.
Bloomsburg had plenty of chances late as it outshot the Saints, 6-1, in the fourth quarter and had a 6-0 margin in penalty corners over the final 15 minutes. But, Limestone's Daisy Ruhle turned away all five shots on goal she faced in the fourth to force the extra session.
In overtime, the Saints' Keaghan Keracher beat Shaffer with 4:15 left in the first extra period to send the Huskies to their third overtime loss of the season.
Bloomsburg led the contest in shots, 12-10, shots on goal, 8-6, and penalty corners, 8-5, but had a difficult time solving Ruhle all afternoon long. The Limestone goalkeeper turned aside seven shots to improve to 7-3 on the year. Senior forward
Willow Perkins (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) led the contest with five shots and four shots on goal - one shy of her career-high in that category.
Shaffer turned away four shots in the contest but saw her record drop to 3-6 in her first collegiate season. She ranks third in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in total saves (49) and is fourth in the league in saves per game (5.44).
