BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University field hockey team was blanked at home by top-ranked West Chester University, 3-0, on Tuesday afternoon at Steph Pettit Stadium. The Huskies dropped to 3-8 overall and 0-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings while the Golden Rams improved to 10-0 overall and 4-0 in conference action.
Highlighting the Huskies on Tuesday, in particular, was the play of junior goalkeeper
Hannah Barnard (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal). She came on to play the second half and did not allow a goal while turning aside 14 West Chester shots over the final 30 minutes. The 14 saves were easily a career-high, breaking her previous-best of eight she posted on two different occasions last season.
The Golden Rams did all of their damage in the first half as the visitors scored a single goal in the first period and then two more in the second against freshman
Abby Shaffer (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin). Caitlin Kelly scored in the sixth minute to give West Chester a 1-0 lead followed by goals from Katie Thompson and Kelly in the second period to push the margin to 3-0.
Shaffer was saddled with the loss as she dropped to 3-7 on the season. She turned aside seven shots in the opening half with senior
Tesa Hoffman (Freeburg, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) getting credit for a defensive save late in the second period. Claire Nielsen improved to 10-0 on the season for the Golden Rams after her sixth shutout of the season.
The Huskies will be back home on Saturday, October 12, to host IUP at Steph Pettit Stadium. Start time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
