BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Redshirt junior goalkeeper
Jenna Hawkins (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) tied a season-high with six saves and sophomore
Nicole Varano (Mt. Carmel, Pa./Mt. Carmel) broke a scoreless tie with her ninth goal of the season less than five minutes into the second half as the sixth-ranked Bloomsburg University women's soccer team established a pair of records in a 1-0 victory over visiting Kutztown on Wednesday night at Steph Pettit Stadium. The Huskies improved to 15-1 overall and 13-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division standings while the Golden Bears dropped to 8-7 overall and 6-7 in divisional play.
With the victory, the Huskies picked up their 13th consecutive win which surpassed the previous school record of 12 straight during the 1994 season. Meanwhile, Hawkins' six-save performance was her ninth blanking of the season and the 28th of her sensational career with the latter breaking the previous school record of 27 held by Amy Linn from 1992-95. Linn was inducted into the Bloomsburg University Hall of Fame in 2013.
Over the last two seasons, Hawkins has gone a ridiculous 31-4-3 with 22 of her 28 career shutouts over her last 38 starts. She has allowed only five goals this season and has not been scored upon in her last 378:50.
The Huskies got off to a bit of a sluggish start but still found themselves in a scoreless tie after the opening 45 minutes of action. Both teams had seven shot attempts with the visiting Golden Bears holding a 3-1 edge in corner kick opportunities in the first half.
But, Bloomsburg wasted little time getting on the board in the second half as Varano notched her ninth goal of the season with a header off of a throw in from senior
Jessica Milligan (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) to give the Huskies a 1-0 advantage. The goal proved to be Varano's team-leading fifth game-winning tally of the season, tying her with IUP's Mahogany Willis for most in the conference.
Hawkins and the defense did the rest as the Golden Bears could not crack the scoreboard to give the team its 11th white-washing of the season.
Bloomsburg held a slim 18-16 edge in shot attempts with the 16 shots taken by the Golden Bears marking the most the Huskies have allowed in a match this season. Hawkins has been the goalkeeper of record in every contest this season as she improved to 15-1 on the year. Kutztown netminder Jenna Bracken dropped to 8-6 on the year with the loss. She turned aside four shots on the night.
Prior to opening kick, the Huskies honored their 2019 senior class - Hawkins, Milligan,
Bryce Watts (Etters, Pa./Red Land),
Alexis Rostucher (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg),
Tayah Naudascher (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan),
Holly Norbury (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional), and
Megan Callan (Eldersburg, Md./Century).
The Huskies, who hold an eight-point lead over second-place Millersville in the Eastern Division standings, return to action on Wednesday, November 6, when they head to West Chester University for a showdown against the Golden Rams. Kickoff is slated for 12:00 p.m.
