BLOOMSBURG, PA -
Travis Elmore (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) deposited 20 points on a sterling 9-of-10 from the floor to power the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team to an 80-64 win over Cheyney Wednesday night. With the win, the Huskies improved to 6-16 on the season, and snapped a season-long nine game losing skid dating back to January 9.
Elmore was one of three Huskies to reach double-digits in the scoring column, as
Peyton Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) splashed in four three-pointers en route to 14 points, and
Nicholas King (Easton, Pa./Freedom) added 10 points.
Sekou Fofana (Philadelphia, Pa./West Catholic) and
Sam Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) had eight points apiece, while guard
William Melson (Allentown, Pa./Dieruff) tallied a career-high 10 assists.
The Huskies were blazing from the floor all evening, shooting 31-of-57 (54.4%) from the field, and 8-of-21 (38.1%) from three-point territory. Bloomsburg's defense was equally impressive, forcing 12 Cheyney turnovers, and holding the Wolves to just 40.6% (26-of-64) shooting. The Huskies also out-rebounded Cheyney 41-31 on the night.
It was Melson that would fuel the Huskies offense in the first frame, dishing out eight first-half helpers as Bloomsburg built a commanding 44-21 lead at the break. The Huskies shot 65.4% from the field in the first period, and notched 14 assists as a team.
The Wolves would punch back in the second half, using an 16-3 run that spanned just over five minutes to trim the Bloomsburg lead to just 10 points with 11:49 to play in the second half. Cheyney would get no closer, however, as the Huskies would rip off 13 straight points to build a 23-point lead with just 7:42 to play.
Cheyney tried for a final rally in the game's waning moments, as a triple from Michael Custis and a layup from Eddie Gibbs Jr. trimmed the deficit to 16, but a three-pointer from King and a jumper from
Ethan Houston (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) would halt the run and seal the win for the Huskies.
Derrick Biney paced the Wolves with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Gibbs added 14 points. Custis finished with 11 points, and Shaimir Joe notched a team-high five assists.
Bloomsburg heads back on the road this Saturday, February 16, to face Millersville University. The Huskies will then head to East Stroudsburg on Wednesday, February 20, before returning home to close out the regular season against Mansfield and Shippensburg. Saturday's battle with the Marauders is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. tip.
