HTML BOX SCORE

BLOOMSBURG, PA - Hannah Jaskuta (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) notched five goals and an assist as the Bloomsburg University lacrosse team opened the 2019 season with an impressive 17-10 home win over Georgian Court Tuesday afternoon. The Huskies have now won their last four opening day contests dating back to the 2016 season.

Jaskuta was one of two Huskies to amass five goals on the afternoon, as redshirt sophomore Grace Kelleher (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) also tallied five goals in the victory. Abby Bergman (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) chipped in two goals and an assist, while Anna Dempsey (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) finished with a team-high two assists. Angela DiPasquale (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) was fantastic between the pipes for Bloomsburg, turning away 16 Georgian Court shots in the complete game victory.

The Lions were led by Amanda Marino, who posted two goals, an assist, and a team-high eight draw controls. Shaine Sauter and Samantha Fernandez each tallied two goals, and Nicole Barbella finished with a team-high two assists.

Georgian Court out-shot the Huskies 33-32 for the game, and won the battle for draw controls 15-14, but were unable to stifle the Bloomsburg attack, allowing the Huskies to convert on 53.1% (17-of-32) of their shot attempts. Bloomsburg was particularly dominant in the first half, converting 19 shots into nine goals, while surrendering just just three goals on 14 shots.

The Huskies wasted little time in breaking the seal on the new season, as Jaskuta deposited her first goal of the game just :39 seconds into the first half. Bloomsburg would open the game with eight consecutive goals before the Lions finally got on the board with 16:05 to play in the half. Dempsey and Megan Smith (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Township) both notched a goal and an assist in the run.

Georgian Court would rally late in the half with goals from Arianna Quinlan, Marino, and Fernandez, but Jaskuta would cap the strong opening frame with a goal to give the Huskies a 9-3 lead at the break.

Another Lions comeback effort early in the second half would trim the Bloomsburg lead to just five with 20:45 to play in the game, but back-to-back goals from Bergman and Kelleher would extend the lead to 13-6 return momentum to the Huskies sideline. Georgian Court attempted one final push late in the half as Angela Palermo scored with 4:49 to play, but Kelleher would deposit her fifth goal of the contest with 2:10 to play to salt away the victory for Bloomsburg.

The Huskies continue a streak of four consecutive games against Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponents this Friday, March 1, when they host Wilmington (DE). First draw from Steph Pettit stadium is set for 5:00 p.m.
