BLOOMSBURG, PA -
Travis Elmore (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) poured in a career-high 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to power the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team to an 89-81 overtime victory over visiting Mansfield University Wednesday night. The Huskies outscored the Mounties 16-8 in the extra session to notch their second overtime victory of the season, and second win in their last four outings.
Bloomsburg dominated for much of regulation, leading by as much as 18 in the first half, and 11 early in the second half, but Mansfield refused to go away quietly, storming back to take a 66-65 lead with just 3:42 to play in the second period.
The Huskies would answer with a 6-0 run to lead by five with just :16 seconds to play in regulation, but a quick three from Mike Rell trimmed Bloomsburg's lead to just two with under :15 seconds remaining. After a Taylor Sweeney steal gave Mansfield a last look with :10 to play, Tyler Moffe converted a contested layup with just :05 second on the clock to force overtime.
Bloomsburg would show tremendous resilience in the extra frame, opening the period with a 6-1 run to take an 80-74 lead with 2:20 remaining. Elmore had four points in the spurt, while
Peyton Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton)Â capped the run with a deep three off a nice dish from
Nicholas King (Easton, Pa./Freedom).
Mansfield continued to fight in the game's waning moments, trimming the Bloomsburg lead to six with just :20 seconds remaining, but a pair of Mortellite free throws and a missed Mountaineers three-point attempt finally secured the thrilling win for the Huskies.
Elmore was stellar late for Bloomsburg, tallying 19 points in the second half and overtime alone. The freshman sensation was 12-of-19 from the floor for the game, and notched his team-best sixth double-double of the season with 10 rebounds. Mortellite was equally impressive for Bloomsburg, finishing with a career-high 21 points, five rebounds, and five made triples.
Sam Saxton (York, Pa./Central York)Â added 14 points, four rebounds, and five assists, while King finished with 11 points.
The Huskies shot 48.5% (32-of-66) from the field as a team, including a sterling 58.1% (18-of-31) in the first half. Bloomsburg out-rebounded Mansfield 46-34, and forced nine Mountaineers turnovers.Â
Garrett Cook was red hot in the first half for Mansfield, posting 15 first-half points on a perfect 5-of-5 from behind the arc. The guard was a blistering 7-of-10 from deep for game, finishing with 21 points. Moffe paced the Mountaineers with 24 points and seven rebounds, and Alvin Eli added 16 points and six boards. Rell stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, five rebounds, and a team-high five assists in the loss.
The Huskies will look to end the regular season on a high note Saturday afternoon when they host Shippensburg. tip-off with the Raiders is set for 3:30 p.m.
