Sekou Fofana (Philadelphia, Pa./West Catholic) tallied 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds, but the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team suffered a 99-77 road setback at Kutztown Wednesday night. The loss drops the Huskies to 5-15 overall, and 2-15 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East, while the Golden Bears improve to 13-10, 7-8 in the PSAC.
Bloomsburg would keep within striking distance of the lead for much of the first half thanks to eight first period points apiece from
Sekou Fofana (Philadelphia, Pa./West Catholic) and
Peyton Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton), but the Golden Bears would erupt for 16 consecutive points late in the period to take a 50-32 lead at the break. Anthony Lee had 14 points in the first half for Kutztown, while Moe Williams tallied 12 points.
The deficit would swell to 30 for the first time at the 6:36 mark of the second half, and a free throw from Da'Quan Granberry would push the Golden Bears lead to as large as 34 late in the game. The Huskies tried to mount one a late comeback thanks to a trio of triples from Mortellite,
Sam Saxton (York, Pa./Central York), and
Devon Ferrero (King of Prussia, Pa./Archbishop Carroll), but the Kutztown margin proved too large to fully erase.
Lee did it all for Golden Bears Wednesday, finishing with a game-high 27 points, six rebounds, and eight assists. Williams was equally impressive for Kutztown, posting 22 points, 10 boards, and six helpers. The Golden Bears shot 57.5% from the floor as a team, and drained nine three-pointers.
Fofana paced the Huskies with 16 points and seven rebounds, while
Travis Elmore (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) added 15 points, seven boards, and four assists. Mortellite tallied 11 points and three assists, and Saxton finished with 12 points. Ferrero was the fifth Husky to finish in double figures, scoring 10 points in just 10 minutes of action.
The Huskies shot just 28-of-65 (43.1%) from the floor as a team, and 8-of-23 (34.8%) from three-point territory. The Golden Bears won the rebounding battle 43-30, and forced 15 Huskies turnovers. Bloomsburg has dropped its last eight games dating back to a January 9 home win over Wilmington (DE).
The Huskies complete a two-game road trip this Saturday, February 9, at Lock Haven. Bloomsburg will look to make it a season sweep of the Bald Eagles after downing Lock Haven 77-71 at home back on January 2. Tip-off Saturday is slated for 3:30 p.m.
