Softball Earns First Win Of Young Season; Splits Doubleheader With West Virginia State Sunday

GLENVILLE, W. Va. - The Bloomsburg University softball team got a sensational pitching performance from sophomore Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) and the first collegiate home run from freshman Sammi Starr (Berwick, Pa./21st Century Cyber Charter) in game two of a doubleheader against West Virginia State on Sunday afternoon as the Huskies earned their first win of the young season with a 3-1 victory to earn a split in the twinbill. The Yellow Jackets earned a 4-1 win over Bloomsburg in the opener.

The Huskies moved to 1-2 on the year while West Virginia State saw its record go to 7-4 overall.

Wild moved to 1-1 on the season after allowing just an unearned run on five hits in the nightcap. She walked three and struck out seven and has yet to allow an earned run in her first two starts of the year.

The Yellow Jackets scored their only run of the game in the top of the third when Brookelyn Hale reached on an error with two outs in the inning which allowed Danielle Lebsock to score from second base for the first run of the contest.

But, the Huskies took the lead in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a two-run home run from Starr. Sophomore Briannah Dobson (York, Pa./Central York) reached on a one-out single and scored when Starr belted her first career home run to straightaway center field two batters later to give Bloomsburg a 2-1 advantage.

Bloomsburg plated an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when senior Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) crossed the dish when junior Kelsey Impink (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) reach on an error by the Yellow Jacket center fielder. Shelhamer, who reached on a two-out single, scored all the way from first to extend the Huskies' lead to 3-1.

Wild retired West Virginia State in order in the top of the seventh to give the Huskies their first victory of the young season.

Bloomsburg managed only four hits against West Virginia State starter Emily Thompson - one each from Shelhamer, Starr, Dobson, and freshman Erin Delpierre. Thompson fell to 1-1 as she allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits. She did not walk a batter and struck out eight.

In the opener, sophomore Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte) made her first start in the circle for the Huskies but suffered the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits in a complete-game effort. She walked one and struck out two.

Baney really made just one mistake when she allowed a three-run home run to Paige Scruggs in the bottom of the fourth as the Yellow Jackets took a 3-0 advantage. The long ball proved to be more than enough offense for starter Emily Moore who allowed an unearned run on four hits for her first win of the year. She did not allow a walk and struck out seven.

The Huskies got a run back in the top of the fifth when senior Emily Getz (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) scored when freshman Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) reached on an error. Getz had led off the inning with a single and then advanced to second when Delpierre grounded out for the second out of the inning.

West Virginia State got the run back in the bottom half of the fifth on an RBI single from Hale.

Barnes had two of Bloomsburg's four hits in the opener while senior Taylor Winkleman and Getz had the other hits. Scruggs finished 2-for-4 with the home run and three runs batted in for the Yellow Jackets.

Bloomsburg will be back in action on Tuesday, March 12, when it heads to Harrogate, Tennessee, to battle Lincoln Memorial in a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
