Women's Lacrosse Drops 9-8 Heartbreaker to Millersville Saturday Afternoon

BLOOMSBURG, PA - Millersville's Genevieve Speights scored the game-winning goal with just :39 seconds remaining to give the Marauders a 9-8 win over the Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Huskies drop to 6-2 overall, and 2-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), while Millersville improves to 2-1 in the conference, and 4-3 overall with the victory.

Trailing 8-7 with under three minutes remaining in the second half, Kirsten Wozniak (Oradell, N.J./River Dell Regional) ripped a goal to tie it at 8-8 and swing momentum in favor of the Huskies, but Speights would find the back of the net in the game's closing minute to nudge the Marauders in front by a point. Bloomsburg had a chance to answer in the final seconds as Cailyn Gormley (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) earned a free position with just :02 seconds to play, but the Millersville defense dashed the Huskies overtime hopes with a stop as time expired.

Midfielder Anna Dempsey (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) was magnificent for the Huskies despite the loss, tallying a game-high five goals on just eight shots, and three draw controls. Abby Bergman (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) chipped in two goals and an assist for Bloomsburg, while Wozniak had the Huskies only other goal. Angela DiPasquale (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) took the loss in goal, but accumulated 13 saves in the complete game effort.

Marauders goalkeeper Shannon Davis had an outstanding day in the net, notching a season-high 16 saves in the win. Speights had a team-high four goals, while Sara Burney had a goal and three assists. Sarah Leverentz, Gillian Zimmerman, Calie Swegon, and Erin Fagan all added goals for Millersville.

After a slow first half that saw the Marauders take a 4-2 lead into the locker room, the Huskies came out firing in the second stanza. Dempsey trimmed the deficit to one with a goal just two minutes into the period, and Bergman knotted the game at 4-4 moments later with her second score of the afternoon. Dempsey was particularly effective in the frame, notching four goals in the second half alone.

Bloomsburg remains home this Wednesday, March 27, for a battle with Seton Hill, before traveling to Edinboro on March 30. First Draw with the Griffins is set for 4:00 p.m. Wednesday.
