WILMINGTON, DE -
Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) hurled a two-hit gem in game one and Freshman
Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) had four RBI on the afternoon as the Bloomsburg University softball team cruised to a doubleheader sweep over Goldey-Beacom College Sunday afternoon. The Huskies waltzed to a 7-0 victory in game one thanks to Wild's tremendous pitching performance, and used a five-run rally in the top of the seventh inning to win game two 5-2.
Wild was electric in the circle for Bloomsburg in a 7-0 game one victory Sunday, surrendering just two hits and no earned runs in the complete game shutout. The sophomore struck out nine batters in the win, and allowed just five walks.
Julia Knight (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) had the big hits at the plate in game one, going 2-for-4 with a double, triple, run scored, and four runs batted in. Barnes went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI, while
Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) went 3-for-5 at the plate.
The Huskies knocked in four runs in the top of the second when Knight smacked a double to center that scored
Kelsey Impink (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley).
Emily Getz (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) would later score when Wild reached on an error, and Barnes capped the big inning when she doubled down the right field line to score Knight and Wild. Bloomsburg tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth when Knight tripled with two outs to bring in Getz,
Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia), and
Sammi Starr (Berwick, Pa./21st Century Cyber Charter).
Zoe Lockwood was the only Goldey-Beacom batter to solve Wild in game one, notching both Lightning hits in the game. Lockwood knocked her first single in the bottom of the first, and added another single in the fifth.
Trailing 2-0 entering the final frame in game two, Starr jump-started a rally with an inside-the-park home run off Lightning pitcher Kaisey Reed.
Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte) would knot it at 2-2 three batters later with an RBI single that scored Knight, and the Huskies took their first lead of the game when Barnes brought in Baney and
Alexis Wetzler (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) with her second RBI double of the day. Barnes would score on the very next batter when DelPierre knocked a single up the middle.
Balee Leeser (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) got the start in the circle for Bloomsburg in game two and allowed two earned runs in 3.1 innings of work, while Baney struck out two in 3.2 scoreless innings in relief. DelPierre was 2-for-4 at the plate in game two, while Barnes went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Rachel Davis and Braydee Whitman each went 2-for-3 for Goldey-Beacom in game two.
Sunday's sweep wraps up an impressive 3-1 weekend for the Huskies, who split a pair of games with Virginia State on Saturday. The Trojans won game one by a final of 9-6, but Bloomsburg bounced back for a 10-0 victory in game two.
The Huskies improve to 7-10 overall and have won their last three games after a 1-5 start to the regular season. Bloomsburg will hit the diamond at Jan M. Hutchinson Field for the first time this year when they host Jefferson in a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. First pitch in game one is set for 2:30 p.m.
