BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's tennis team had little trouble on Wednesday afternoon as it took care of visiting East Stroudsburg University, 7-0, at the Burt Reese Tennis Center. The Huskies improved to 11-2 overall and 2-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings while the Warriors dropped to 5-6 overall and 1-2 in league action.
Bloomsburg opened the day by earning the team doubles point after a sweep of the Warriors. Senior
Siena Cerra (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy) and sophomore
Isabella Sarquis (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Metodo) won the first match at #3 by the final of 6-0 over East Stroudsburg's duo of Lauren Morrissey and Charity McLeod. Junior
Taylor Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and sophomore
Giovanna Bonito (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Reino) then clinched the doubles points with a 6-1 win at #2 over Aubrianna Stetina and Amanda Jackson. Juniors
Vitoria Nery (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Educandário Santa Maria Goretti) and
Cassidy Calimer (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Absegami) completed the sweep with a 6-3 victory at #1 over Marina Zardet and Quinn McCluskey.
The Huskies carried the momentum into singles competition as they won all six matches to complete the shutout of the Warriors.
Senior
Cassie Wentz (Windber, Pa./Winber Area) pushed the Bloomsburg lead to 2-0 after not losing a single point in a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Briana Young at #5. Nery then posted her second victory of the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-0 win at #3 over Stetina. Bonito sealed the match at #4 after posting a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jackson.
Sarquis, Calimer, and Capoferri closed out the day with straight-set victories as the Huskies inched a little closer to securing a postseason berth in the PSAC tournament later this month.
The teams also played three exhibition matches on Wednesday afternoon with none being more entertaining to watch than the contest between Bloomsburg sophomore Hailie Hoeflein and East Stroudsburg team manager Meaghan Hyer. The two played a single set and, while it didn't count on the scoresheet, it certainly made a lasting impression on everyone involved.
