BLOOMSBURG, PA -
Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) belted two home runs and had six RBI on the afternoon as the Bloomsburg University softball team cruised to a pair of five-inning victories over Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central action Friday. The Huskies took game one by a final of 10-2, and followed with an impressive 12-2 victory in game two. With the wins, Bloomsburg improves to 20-13 overall, and 7-3 in the crowded PSAC Central.
Shelhamer was a machine at the plate Friday, going 3-for-4 with six runs batted in and three runs scored in the two wins. The senior now has four dingers on the year, and leads the Huskies in runs batted in with 22.
Despite the lopsided final scores, Bloomsburg was slow out of the blocks in both contests, falling behind 2-1 after three innings. The Golden Eagles got their runs on a double from Taylor Nonnenberg that plated Moriah Lynn and Molly Cowden.
The Clarion lead would not last long, however, as the Huskies would rally for six runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a commanding 7-2 lead. Shelhamer got the scoring started with a three-run bomb to left to nudge Bloomsburg in front by two, and
Julia Knight (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) followed with a double that scored
Sammi Starr (Berwick, Pa./21st Century Cyber Charter).
Alexa Erney (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) capped the big inning with a two-run bomb to left to extend the Huskies lead to five. Erney has now homered in three of her last five games and has a team-high six long balls on the season.
Bloomsburg tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth on RBI's from
Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh), Shelhamer, and Starr to secure the five-inning victory.
Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) was sensational in the circle in game one, limiting the Golden Eagles to just two hits and two unearned runs in 5.0 innings of work. Wild fanned five and walked just two in the victory.
Briannah Dobson (York, Pa./Central York) went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Huskies in game one, while DelPierre went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Winkelman went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Huskies fell behind early in game two as well, as Nonnenberg smacked a double to left that brought in Lynn, but Bloomsburg punched back with a trio of runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-1 lead after two.
Kelsey Impink (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) broke the seal for the Huskies with a double that scored Erney, and she would later score on a sacrifice from
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield).
The Golden Eagles chipped away at the deficit with a run in the top of the third on an RBI single from Rebecca Kelley, but Bloomsburg exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the third to extend the lead to seven. Shelhamer got the scoring started with a two-run shot to left center that scored
Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin), and Baney would later follow with a majestic grand slam to left field that extend the lead to 9-2. An RBI single from Starr capped the big inning.
The lead would balloon to 12-2 in the bottom of the fourth thanks to an RBI double from Impink and an RBI groundout from Barnes, and
Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte) would shut the door on the five-inning win with a 1-2-3 fifth frame. Baney continued her stellar stretch of recent performances, allowing just two unearned runs on three hits and striking out six. The sophomore has allowed just four earned runs over her last 54.2 innings pitched.
Starr and Impink both went 2-for-3 at the plate in game two, while Impink added three runs and two RBI. Nonnenberg, Kelley, and Makenzie Wolfe had the hits for Clarion.
The Huskies get right back to work Saturday afternoon with another home PSAC Central matchup against Mansfield University. First pitch from Hutchinson Field is slated for 1:00 p.m.
