Offensive Outburst Leads Softball to Sweep Over Holy Family Tuesday

BENSALEM, PA - Sammi Starr (Berwick, Pa./21st Century Cyber Charter) had a homer and four RBI in game one, and Kelsey Impink (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) went 5-for-5 in game two as the Bloomsburg University softball team coasted to a pair of victories over Holy Family University Tuesday. The Huskies erupted for a season-high 20 runs in just five innings of a 20-2 game one victory, and followed with a whopping 20 hits in a 14-1 win in game two. The 20 runs were the most Bloomsburg has scored in a single game since April 22, 2012, when the Huskies downed Clarion 20-0 in six innings. Bloomsburg improves to 26-15 overall with the victories.

The Huskies offense was lethal from the opening inning of game one, as Starr mashed a a three-run shot in the top of the first to give Bloomsburg an early 3-0 lead after one. Bloomsburg added four runs in the second when Kalynn Wheeland (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) belted a two-run homer that scored Alexa Erney (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley), and Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) laced a two-run double that plated Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) and Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield).

The party did not stop in the third, as the Huskies tacked on nine runs in the inning to take a commanding 14-0 lead after three. Barnes, Starr, and Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) all had runs batted in for Bloomsburg in the inning. Holy Family would answer with two runs in the bottom half of the inning when Sam Klem belted a two-run long ball off Huskies started Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley), but the two runs would be the Tigers only scores of the game.

An RBI double from Barnes and an RBI groundout from Annika Gemberling (Denver, N.C./East Lincoln) would make it 16-2 in the fourth inning, and a four-run fifth inning highlighted by an RBI single from Jadyn Dunkelberger (Shamokin, Pa./Southern Columbia) would cap the blowout victory for the Huskies.

Starr, Wheeland, Barnes, and Shelhamer each two hits in game one, while Wheeland added three runs batted in and four runs scored. Wild earned her team-high 15th win of the season after surrendering just two earned runs on five hits in five innings of work.

Bloomsburg would not break through on the scoreboard in game two until the top of the fourth, when Wheeland, DelPierre, and Briannah Dobson (York, Pa./Central York) all notched runs batted in to give the Huskies a 4-0 lead.

Bloomsburg added two runs in the fifth, two runs in the sixth, and exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh to cruise to a 14-1 victory. DelPierre got the seventh started with a double that brought in Barnes and Winkelman, and Wheeland bookended the big frame with a double that scored Impink and Emily Getz (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown).

Impink was 5-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored in game two, while Dobson and Wheeland had three RBI apiece. DelPierre was 2-for-4 with two doubles, four runs batted in, and two runs scored in the victory. Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte) was sensational in the circle in game two, limiting Holy Family to just two hits and one unearned run in the complete-game victory.

The Huskies return to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central action this Friday when they wrap up a six-game road trip at Clarion. Bloomsburg returns home on Saturday to close out the regular season with a doubleheader against IUP. First pitch with Clarion is set for 2:30 p.m.
