Men's Tennis Handles Visiting Wilkes, 6-1, Thursday Evening

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University men's tennis team picked up its first home victory of the season on Thursday evening as it took care of visiting Wilkes University, 6-1, at the Burt Reese Tennis Center. The Huskies improved to 7-6 overall while the Colonels fell to 10-6 on the year.

The Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match by sweeping the doubles action. Sophomores Guille Carranza (Sevilla, Spain/Escolapios) and Bernardo Abreu (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Rogedo) opened with a 6-3 victory at #1 which was followed by sophomores Benjamin Tauber (Bethlehem, Pa./Nazareth Area) and Nagid Walle (Willemstad, Curacao/Saint Andrews (Fla.)) clinching the point with a 6-1 win at #3. Sophomore Robin Luetzig (Hadamar, Germany/Furst Johann Ludwig Schule) and freshman Oliver Wiesemann (Jena, Germany/Colegio Alemán de Málaga, Spain) completed the doubles sweep with a 6-4 victory at #2.

Bloomsburg continued the momentum into singles competition as Walle opened with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Colin Greenman at #5 to push the Huskies' advantage to 2-0. Luetzig, the reigning Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Athlete of the Week, followed with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Alec Levin at #6 to extend the lead to 3-0. Carranza posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jonathan White at #2 to clinch the match for the Huskies.

Tauber and Wiesemann each posted straight-set victories at #3 and #4, respectively, before the Colonels avoided the shutout with a victory by Chris Maderitz at #1.

The Huskies will play their final match of the regular season on Saturday, April 27, when they entertain West Liberty University at the Burt Reese Tennis Center. The match is slated to get underway at 12:00 p.m. Bloomsburg will then be off until Friday, May 3, when it plays against Mercyhurst University in a semifinal match, also at the Burt Reese Tennis Center. Action gets underway at 2:00 p.m.
