Women's Tennis Stays Hot With 5-2 Win Over Visiting Wilkes Thursday Evening

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's tennis team kept rolling on Thursday evening as it posted a 5-2 victory over visiting Wilkes University at the Burt Reese Tennis Center. The Huskies improved to 14-2 overall and picked up its sixth consecutive win with the victory over the Colonels. Wilkes fell to 10-4 on the year.

The Huskies started the evening by winning two of the three doubles matches to claim the team point heading into singles action. Sophomore Isabella Sarquis (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Metodo) and junior Cassidy Calimer (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Absegami) blanked Alexa Cieri and Dagney Markle, 6-0, at #2. The Colonels tied the doubles action with a victory by Francesca Valera-Seri and Sarah Malone at #3 but the Huskies' duo of junior Taylor Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and sophomore Giovanna Bonito (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Reino) took the deciding doubles match with a 6-3 victory at #1.

The singles action was just as competitive as five of the six matches went to a third-set superbreaker. The only one that was decided in straight sets came at #2 where Calimer gave the Huskies a 2-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Dasha Yakhnis. With the victory, Calimer picked up her team-leading 14th win of the season in singles as she moved to 14-5 overall.

Senior Cassie Wentz (Windber, Pa./Winber Area) extended the Bloomsburg lead to 3-0 with a 6-0, 2-6, 10-7 victory over Erin Volutza at #4 to pick up her 12th win of the season. Volutza entered the night with a team-high 15 victories for Wilkes. After the Colonels cut the Bloomsburg lead to 3-1 with a victory by Valera-Seri at #1, Bonito sealed the Huskies' win with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 win at #3 over Dana Saliyev. Bonito trailed by several points in the third set before going on a run to post the two-point win in the deciding set.

Markle picked up the Colonels' second win of the night at #6 before Sarquis finished off the Huskies' victory with a 5-7, 6-0, 10-5 win at #5 over Rachel Thomas.
