Women's Tennis Advances To PSAC Semifinals With Thrilling 4-3 Victory Over Millersville Tuesday

HTML BOX SCORE

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Junior Vitoria Nery (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Educandário Santa Maria Goretti) won the deciding match in a third set on Tuesday afternoon to lift the Bloomsburg University women's tennis team to a hard-fought 4-3 victory over visiting Millersville University at the Burt Reese Tennis Center in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) quarterfinal match. The Huskies have now won seven straight to improve to 15-2 overall while the Marauders end their season with a 9-16 overall record. It marks the third consecutive season that the Huskies have advanced to the semifinal round of the PSAC tournament.

Tied at 3-3 with #3 singles yet to be decided, Nery was able to break serve - leading 5-3 in the third set - to seal the victory for the Huskies as she out-lasted Millersville's Kelsey Heckert to send Bloomsburg to the semifinal round on Friday. Nery won the first set, 6-2, before Heckert sent the match to the deciding set with a 6-4 win the second.

Nery led wire-to-wire in the third set and secured the win just moments after Millersville's Victoria Hanus earned a three-set victory over sophomore Giovanna Bonito (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Reino) at #4 singles to tie the match at 3-3. The junior improved to 12-2 overall and will take an eight-match winning streak into the semifinals on Friday.

Bloomsburg secured the doubles point with victories at #1 and at #2 as the Huskies took a 1-0 lead into singles action. Nery teamed with junior Cassidy Calimer (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Absegami) for a 6-3 victory at #2 for the Huskies' first win while junior Taylor Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) joined Bonito for a 6-2 win at #1 to earn the team doubles point. The Nery and Calimer duo improved to 13-4 in doubles play this season while the team of Capoferri and Bonito moved to 13-5 overall.

Senior Cassie Wentz (Windber, Pa./Winber Area) gave the Huskies a 2-0 advantage with her 7-6 (1), 6-1 victory over Millersville's Megan Rovenolt at #5. Wentz moved her record to 14-3 overall in singles play and has a five-match winning streak. The Marauders answered with their first victory of the afternoon when Corinne Grohoski defeated sophomore Isabella Sarquis (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Metodo) in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

Calimer extended the lead to 3-1 despite dropping the first set against Jasmine Morris at #2. The junior took sets two and three by identical 6-3 scores to bring the Huskies to within one win of advancing in the tournament. Calimer leads the Huskies with 15 victories on the year as she moved to 15-5 overall. She will take a seven-match winning streak into the semifinals.

Millersville sent the match to the deciding battle between Nery and Heckert as Katina Jones earned a well-played 7-5, 7-5 win over Capoferri at #1 and then Hanus earned her victory over Bonito at #4 to set up Nery's heroics.

Bloomsburg advances to the PSAC Semifinals where it will square off against the top seed from the Western Division, Slippery Rock University, on Friday, May 3, at the Burt Reese Tennis Center. Action is scheduled to get underway at 11:00 a.m.
