Red Hot Huskies Sweep Softball Doubleheader With Bloomfield College

GAME 1 HTML | GAME 2 HTML

BLOOMSBURG, PA - Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in and four runs scored on the day as the Bloomsburg University softball team waltzed to a pair of wins over visiting Bloomfield College Wednesday afternoon. The Huskies have now won five straight games and 10 of their last 11, and are 14-11 overall on the season. Bloomsburg downed the Bears 9-1 in six innings in game one, and capped the sweep with a 7-2 triumph in game two.

The Huskies wasted no time before seizing control of game one, plating a run in the bottom of the first inning and five more in the bottom half of the second to take a commanding 6-0 lead at two. Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) got the scoring started in the first when she scored on an error, and Barnes had the big hit in the second, smacking a double to the gap in right center that scored Briannah Dobson (York, Pa./Central York) and Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte).

Bloomsburg would extend its lead to seven runs in the bottom of the third when Dobson knocked in Julia Knight (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) with a single to center field, but the Bears answered with a run in the top of the fourth to make it 7-1 after four.

Needing a pair of runs to end game one early, the Huskies got what they were looking for in the bottom of the sixth when Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington) laced an RBI single to center that plated Barnes and made it 8-1. Ray would score just three batters later on a fielders choice to lock up the six-inning victory for Bloomsburg.

Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) was tremendous in the circle for the Huskies in game one, striking out six and allowing just one earned run on six hits in the complete game victory. Wild is now 9-5 on the season, and has earned the victory in five of her last six starts. Taylor Galyean took the loss in the circle for Bloomfield after surrendering five earned runs on three hits in just 2.0 innings of work.

Bloomsburg would set the tone early once again in game two, notching a pair of scores in the bottom of the second to take an early 2-0 lead. Kelsey Impink (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) broke the seal when she scored on a wild pitch, and Baney knocked in the second run with an RBI groundout that brought in Sammi Starr (Berwick, Pa./21st Century Cyber Charter).

The Bears answered in the top of the third with two runs on an RBI single from Jerae Keli'ikoa that knotted it at 2-2, but the Huskies knocked in three runs in the bottom of the fifth to retake control of game two. Bloomsburg added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth when Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) roped a double that scored Winkelman, and Starr plated Barnes with an RBI single.

Starr was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored in game two, while Barnes went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Fellow freshman DelPierre was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Kalynn Wheeland (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) was 1-for-2 with a walk. Baney continued her recent hot stretch in the circle, fanning eight and allowing just one earned run on five hits in the complete game victory.

Delanie Cruz was 2-for-3 with a run scored for Bloomfield in game two, while Keli'ikoa was 2-for-3 with an RBI in game one. Galyean got the nod again in game two and allowed two earned runs on just three hits, while Maddie Feddersen surrendered three earned runs in 2.0 innings of relief.

Bloomsburg returns to PSAC Central play this Friday, April 5, at Pitt-Johnstown. The Huskies will then travel to IUP for a divisional doubleheader on Saturday, April 6, before wrapping up a six-game road trip next Tuesday, April 9, at Millersville. First pitch in game one with the Mountain Cats is set for 2:30 p.m. Friday.
