INDIANA, Pa. - Sophomore
Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) pitched a complete-game two-hitter in the opener as the Bloomsburg University softball team split a doubleheader at IUP on Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division showdown. The Huskies posted a 4-1 victory in game one before falling to the Crimson Hawks, 3-1, in game two as Bloomsburg moved to 15-12 overall and 4-2 in divisional play. IUP moved to 7-18 overall and 3-3 in the Central Division.
Wild was in complete control in game one as she allowed one run on two hits while walking three and striking out nine to improve to 10-5 on the season. Kassie Kesneck had both Crimson Hawk hits - a leadoff single in the bottom of the first and a leadoff double in the bottom of the sixth.
The sophomore received all of the offensive support she would need in the top of the first inning as the Huskies scored three times against IUP starter Lauren Zola. Senior
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield) opened the contest with a solo home run - her first of the season - as the Huskies took a 1-0 lead. Freshman
Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) followed with a single and then advanced to second when freshman
Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) reached on a fielder's choice. After a passed ball allowed both runners to move up a base, senior
Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) lifted a fly ball to center which was deep enough for Barnes to tag up and score for a 2-0 advantage. DelPierre, who also advanced to the Shelhamer sacrifice fly, then scored on a wild pitch for the third run of the inning.
The Huskies added to the lead in the top of the fourth inning with a run on three hits. Senior
Emily Getz (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) drew a one-out walk to start the rally and then advanced to second on a single by redshirt sophomore
Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington). Two batters later, Winkelman loaded the bases on an infield single and Barnes followed with a base hit which scored Getz from third to extend the advantage to 4-0. Ray was thrown out at the plate on the hit by Barnes to end the inning.
IUP got its lone run in the bottom of the sixth as Kesneck led off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Brooklyn Kotula which broke up Wild's shutout bid. The Huskies' righthander got out of the inning without any further damage and then retired the Crimson Hawks in order in the bottom of the seventh to seal the victory.
Zola dropped to 2-8 for IUP as she allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits in a complete-game effort. She walked three and struck out six.
Winkelman, Barnes, and Ray each had two of Bloomsburg's seven hits in the opener. DelPierre had the other hit to extend her hitting streak to 14 consecutive games.
Sophomore
Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte) got the ball in the game two but was touched up for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning as the Crimson Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 advantage. IUP's Lauren Goetz reached on a one-out single then advanced to second a wild pitch. After a strikeout of Kaitlyn Beers for the second out of the inning, back-to-back doubles by Renee Wall and Jenna Rhue accounted for the first two runs of the contest.
Bloomsburg got a run back in the top of the second after junior
Kelsey Impink (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) led off with a triple and then scored on an RBI single from freshman
Sammi Starr (Berwick, Pa./21st Century Cyber Charter) to cut the deficit to 2-1. Getz followed with a single but IUP starter Brooklyn Kotula was able to induce a double play off the bat of senior
Kalynn Wheeland (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) and then strike out Baney to prevent any more damage.
Both pitchers settled as the only other run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning when the Crimson Hawks tacked on an insurance run to extend the advantage to 3-1. Bethany Bunner accounted for the run as she laced a two-out single to right to drive home Wall who was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame.
The Huskies went 1-2-3 in the seventh as Kotula went the distance to improve to 4-4 on the year. She allowed one run on six hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out only one. Baney, meanwhile, fell to 5-7 on the year after allowed three runs on six hits in a complete-game outing. She walked two and struck out seven.
DelPierre extended her hitting streak to 15 straight in game two after going 2-for-3 in the nightcap. Shelhamer, Impink, Starr, and Getz had the other hits for the Huskies. Wall and Rhue each had two hits for the Crimson Hawks.
Bloomsburg will be back in action on Sunday afternoon with a PSAC Central Division doubleheader at Pitt-Johnstown. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
