ETTRICK, Va. - The Bloomsburg University women's tennis team bounced back from its loss at West Chester on Thursday to post a 7-0 shutout victory at Virginia State on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference contest. The Huskies improved to 9-2 overall on the season while the Trojans dropped to 7-3 on the year.
Bloomsburg started the day with a doubles sweep to take a 1-0 lead in the team score. Senior
Siena Cerra (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy) and sophomore
Isabella Sarquis (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Metodo) posted a default win at #3 which was followed by a 6-0 victory at #2 by the duo of junior
Taylor Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and sophomore
Giovanna Bonito (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Reino). Juniors
Vitoria Nery (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Educandário Santa Maria Goretti) and
Cassidy Calimer (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Absegami) completed the sweep with a 6-3 victory at #1.
Redshirt freshman
Devon DiCampli (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) started singles action with a default win at #6 to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead. Sarquis followed with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Zimaris Smith at #5 and Bonito secured the victory with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #4 over Deja Lovitt. Calimer took down Kaela Mack, 6-3, 6-1, at #2 and Nery earned a 6-2, 6-3 win at #3 over Christina Washington. The match of the day came at #1 when Capoferri finished the shutout with a come-from-behind 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-8 victory over Sydney Yao. The loss marked Yao's first setback of the season while Capoferri earned her eighth singles win of the season.
Bloomsburg will be back in action on Sunday with a non-conference matchup at Shepherd University to close out the weekend. First serve is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
