POMONA, N.Y. – Freshman
Jared Marshman (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) gave the Bloomsburg University baseball team six and one-third dominant innings on the mound as the Huskies won for the eighth time in their last ten games with an 11-2 victory at St. Thomas Aquinas on Tuesday night. With the win, Bloomsburg improved to 18-8 overall while the Spartans fell to 11-19 on the season. The Huskies also clinched the season series against the Spartans, three games to two.
Â
Marshman was sensational early as he allowed only one baserunner – a one-out single by Tyler Patane in the second – through the first five innings and faced the minimum over the same stretch as Patane was erased on a double play to end the home half of the second.
Â
The offense provided all the run support Marshman would need in the top of the first as the Huskies scored four times on St. Thomas Aquinas starter, Justin Baeyens. Sophomore
Jake Reed (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) led off the frame with a single and stole second before sophomore
Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton) drew a one-out walk. Sophomore
Jared Burcin (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) laced a single to center to drive home Reed for the game's first run. Then, two batters later, junior
Andrew Holmes (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) provided the big blow with a three-run home run to right center – his fourth of the season – to give the Huskies a 4-0 advantage.
Â
Bloomsburg added single runs in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to extend the lead to 8-0. In the third, Newbert reached on a one-out double, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on a two-out infield single from junior
Cole Swiger (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin). In the fourth, junior
Nate Krizan (Montoursville, Pa./Home School) led off with a single, advanced to third on a double from redshirt freshman
Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech), and then scored on an RBI groundout by Reed.
Â
The lead ballooned to 7-0 on the top of the fifth when Swiger reached on a one-out single, advanced to third on a single by Holmes, and then scored on a sacrifice fly from senior
Ryan Shiffer (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South). In the sixth, Chasanov led off by reaching on an error then promptly stole second and third and finally scored on a two-out single by Newbert.
Â
St. Thomas Aquinas finally solved Marshman in the bottom of the sixth as it plated a run to break up the shutout bid. Brian Donnelly led off with a single and scored on a two-out double by Andrew Jemison.
Â
The Spartans plated another run in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to 8-2. After retiring the leadoff batter, Marshman walked the next two hitters to end his night on the mound. Junior
Ed Herbener (Drums, Pa./MMI Preparatory School) came on in relief and allowed an infield single that scored Michael Morgan who drew the first free pass. Then, after a bloop single by Donnelly loaded the bases with one out, Herbener struck out Jonathan Meaney and Michael D'Andrea to close out the frame.
Â
Bloomsburg put the game on ice in the top of the ninth as it scored three times to take an 11-2 advantage. Shiffer started the rally with a one-out single which was followed by a base hit from Krizan to put runners at first and second. Chasanov, who hadn't had an at bat during the last ten games, picked up his third hit of the night which drove home Shiffer. Krizan then scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 10-2 before freshman
Jack Sullivan (Harleysville, Pa./Germantown Academy) found a hole through the right side of the infield to plate Chasanov for the final run of the night. It was Sullivan's first collegiate hit and RBI.
Â
Herbener stayed in the game and closed out the Huskies' victory, pitching around a hit and a walk in the final inning.
Â
Marshman improved to 3-0 on the season as he allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits in six and one-third innings. He walked two and struck out five. Herbener finished out the win, allowing three hits and a walk in two and two-thirds scoreless innings of relief. He struck out six.
Â
Baeyens pitched only the first two innings and suffered the loss for the Spartans. He allowed four runs on three hits, walked one, and struck out three. Dylan Leahy, Alex Mack, and Darnell Chandler closed out the night for St. Thomas Aquinas.
Â
Bloomsburg finished with a season-high 16 hits at the plate as Chasanov went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three stolen bases in his first real action since March 24. Holmes went 2-for-2 with a home run and three runs batted in while Newbert, Burcin, Swiger, and Krizan also added two hits apiece at the dish.
The Huskies are scheduled square off against the Warriors of East Stroudsburg in a big four-game series beginning on Friday, April 12, in Bloomsburg. Then, after a day off, the teams will conclude the weekend in East Stroudsburg on Sunday, April 14.
