Field Hockey Drops 5-1 Decision At #2 West Chester Wednesday Afternoon

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University field hockey team suffered a 5-1 loss at second-ranked West Chester University on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup at Vonnie Gros Field. The Huskies dropped to 0-2 on the young season while the Golden Rams improved to 2-0.

Despite the outcome, the Huskies' youth shone brightly as freshman Meghan Longenhagen (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia) scored her first collegiate goal and freshman goalkeeper Abby Shaffer (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) kept Bloomsburg in the contest by turning aside 11 West Chester shots in her first collegiate start between the pipes.

West Chester took a 2-0 advantage at halftime with a goal in each of the first two quarters as Shaffer stopped six shots in the opening 30 minutes of play to keep the Huskies within striking distance. Katie Thompson put the hosts on the board with just under four minutes left in the first quarter off of an assist from Kat Roncoroni and then Caitie McNamara extended the margin - off of an assist from Thompson - five minutes into the second quarter.

The Golden Rams added some breathing room in the third as they scored two goals in the span of 37 seconds to double the lead to 4-0. The McNamara-from-Thompson connection struck again in the 38th minute and then Roncoroni notched the next marker to balloon the lead.

Longenhagen got Bloomsburg on the scoreboard less than 90 seconds later with her first collegiate goal to cut the West Chester lead to 4-1 heading to the fourth. But, in the fourth, Caitlin Kelly regained the four-goal lead for the Golden Rams in the 50th minute to provide the final goal of the afternoon.

Shaffer stopped 11 shots in a valiant effort as she made her first career start against the second-ranked team in the country. On the flip side, Shaffer's counterpart Claire Nelson stopped one shot to secure her second victory of the season. The Golden Rams held a 21-2 shot advantage and owned a slim 4-2 margin in penalty corners.

The Huskies will look to pick up their first victory of the young season when they head to IUP to battle the Crimson Hawks on Saturday afternoon, September 14. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
