#5 Women's Soccer Falls, 1-0, To East Stroudsburg In Double Overtime Thriller

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The fifth-ranked Bloomsburg University women's soccer team and the Warriors of East Stroudsburg University fought another tremendous battle at Steph Pettit Stadium on Wednesday night. In the end, however, East Stroudsburg's Monica Wood scored with 3:39 left in the second overtime for the game's only goal as the Huskies suffered their first loss of the young 2019 season. Bloomsburg fell to 2-1 overall while the Warriors improved to 2-0 on the year in what was the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener for both teams.

In a rematch of Bloomsburg's epic 2-1 overtime victory over East Stroudsburg in last year's PSAC title match - and the Huskies' 1-0 win in the second round of the NCAA tournament - the two teams did not disappoint the nearly 250 fans that came out to watch. The game was stopped with just over 17 minutes left in the opening half because of lightning but play resumed after roughly a 30-minute delay.

Bloomsburg had momentum early as the hosts peppered East Stroudsburg goalkeeper Mauri Jackson with ten first-half shot attempts but the sophomore goalkeeper was able to keep the Huskies off the scoreboard. It was more of the same early in the second half with Bloomsburg's best chance coming off the foot of junior Maggie McDonald (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) with just under 22 minutes left in regulation. McDonald received a centering pass and had Jackson beat to the far side but her shot rang off the post and the game remained scoreless.

The Warriors mounted some pressure on redshirt junior goalkeeper Jenna Hawkins (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) late in regulation but the Huskies' netminder turned aside five shots in a six-minute span to keep East Stroudsburg off the board. Hawkins' first big save came on Wood who had a breakaway opportunity with just over ten minutes left and then the redshirt junior goalkeeper had back-to-back diving stops on Corryn Gamber with six minutes and change remaining.

After a scoreless first overtime that saw the only shot come off the foot of Bloomsburg senior Megan Callan (Eldersburg, Md./Century), the Warriors caught a break in the offensive zone and Gamber found a sprinting Wood up the left wing. Wood cut to the center of the field, deked around a Huskies' defender, and beat Hawkins low for the only goal of the night.

Both keepers made some huge saves with Jackson stopping seven Bloomsburg shots and Hawkins turning aside six East Stroudsburg attempts. Hawkins dropped to 2-1 overall while Jackson improved to 2-0. The Huskies owned the pressure for much of the night as Bloomsburg held a 23-11 shot advantage and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Huskies will look to get back on track on Saturday afternoon, September 14, when they head to Mansfield University for a contest against the Mountaineers. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. The Huskies and the Warriors will tangle again on Wednesday, September 25, in East Stroudsburg.
