WATERBURY, Conn. - After dropping the first two sets to Felician University on Saturday night, the Bloomsburg University women's volleyball team rallied to win the final three as it came from behind to stun the Golden Falcons, 3-2, to salvage a split on day one of the Post University Tournament. In the opener, the Huskies dropped a four-set decision against Southern Connecticut State. Bloomsburg moved to 2-4 overall on the season while Southern Connecticut State improved to 5-0 and Felician dropped to 1-5.
Bloomsburg lost the two first sets to Felician by the scores of 25-18 and 25-22 before rebounding for 25-21, 25-20, and 15-7 victories in sets three, four, and five, to give the Huskies their second victory over the Golden Falcons in as many weekends. Bloomsburg also earned a five-set win over Felician last weekend at the Ashland University Tournament.
Sophomore
Mary Kate Mooney (Royersford, Pa./Pope John Paul II) paced the Huskies with 18 kills and a .256 hitting percentage. She chipped in with eight digs and led the way with 18 points. Sophomore
Grace Giza (Plymouth, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) chipped in 13 kills (.229 hitting percentage) and led the squad with six total blocks (two solo, four assists) for a total of 17 points. Sophomore
Sydney Buell (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) also finished with double-digit points has she had six kills, four service aces, and four assisted blocks for a total of 12 points.
Freshmen
Julia Burcin (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and
Shayna Warfel (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) also had solid matches for the Huskies as Burcin had six kills, two solo blocks, and three assisted blocks while Warfel had five kills, three service aces, five digs, and one assisted block.
Defensively, the Huskies were led by the reigning Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Defensive Athlete of the Week, junior
Alyssa Cianciulli (Royersford, Pa./Pope John Paul II), who had 36 digs to go along with five assists. Freshman
Brooke Kratzer (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) finished with a team-high 23 assists while sophomore
Bryn Stek (Ambler, Pa./Upper Dublin) added 19.
The Huskies hit .160 for the match and broke the school record with 14 total team blocks in the victory. Bloomsburg also had 11 service aces with Buell leading the way with four while Warfel and Kratzer added three each. Felician, meanwhile, hit .133 on the night with Katie Asbery and Maddie Sloan leading the Golden Falcons with 12 kills apiece.
In the opener, the Huskies and the Owls split the first two sets before Southern Connecticut State won the final two to remain unbeaten on the season.
Buell posted a team-high 14 kills and hit .297 for the match while pacing the Huskies with 15 points on the afternoon. Giza was tremendous as she hit a whopping .435 with 12 kills (two errors) on 23 attempts. She added an assisted block for 12.5 points. Burcin added five kills (.267 hitting percentage) while Warfel and Mooney had four kills apiece.
Stek led Bloomsburg with 18 assists and six digs while Kratzer added 13 assists and five digs as the duo continues to split time at the setter position. Cianciulli finished with 22 digs while Mooney was also in double figures with a dozen.
Bloomsburg actually hit better in the opener (.164) then it did in its victory over Felician. However, the Huskies totaled only five blocks and allowed Southern Connecticut State to hit .241 for the match. Bloomsburg did have nine aces - three from Warfel and two from Mooney. The Owls had four players reach double figures in kills while Tea Carter had a double-double with 46 assists and 10 digs.
Bloomsburg will finish out the two-day tournament on Sunday, September 15, when it meets the hosts from Post University at 11:30 a.m. before tangling with Saint Anselm at 5:30 p.m.
