Women's Volleyball Earns Second Consecutive Split At Post Tournament Sunday

WATERBURY, Conn. - The Bloomsburg University women's volleyball team earned its second consecutive split on Sunday during the final day of competition at the Post University Tournament. The Huskies opened day two with a 21-25, 25-15, 25-15, 25-15 victory over Post University before dropping a 16-25, 25-19, 14-25, 22-25 decision against Saint Anselm in the nightcap. The Huskies moved to 3-5 overall on the season with Post falling to 0-9 and Saint Anselm improving to 3-5.

In the opener against the Eagles, Bloomsburg dropped the first set before rebounding in a big way to win the next three sets by identical 25-15 scores. Sophomore Grace Giza (Plymouth, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) and freshman Shayna Warfel (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) paced the Huskies with nine kills apiece with Warfel's total establishing a new career-high. Giza added one solo block and five assisted blocks while Warfel chipped in with seven digs, three assisted blocks, and a service ace. The freshman also hit a team-high .438 for the match.

Sophomore Mary Kate Mooney (Royersford, Pa./Pope John Paul II) added eight kills and nine digs while redshirt sophomore Olivia Pagano (Galeton, Pa./Galeton Area) added five kills in the victory. Freshman Julia Burcin (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) had four kills and set a new school record with seven assisted blocks as the Huskies had 12 total team blocks in the opener. Defensively, junior Alyssa Cianciulli (Royersford, Pa./Pope John Paul II) had a team-high 18 digs while the setter position was once again split by freshman Brooke Kratzer (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and sophomore Bryn Stek (Ambler, Pa./Upper Dublin) who combined for 30 assists, 12 digs, and seven service aces.

Bloomsburg hit .161 as a team and held the edge over the Eagles in kills (39-30), service aces (12-3), and blocks (12-2). The Huskies also held Post to just an .035 hitting percentage for the match.

However, against the Hawks in the nightcap, the Huskies just couldn't get going. After splitting the first two sets, Saint Anselm won the final two sets to win the match and send Bloomsburg to a 2-2 record for the weekend.

The Huskies hit only .114 on the offensive end while Saint Anselm posted a .259 hitting percentage as a team.

Giza had another strong match by leading the way with eight kills and six total blocks (two solo, four assisted) to total a team-high 12 points. Mooney led the Huskies with 10 kills while adding seven digs and an ace for a total of 11 points. Pagano and Burcin chipped in seven kills apiece with Burcin adding three assisted blocks.

Cianciulli led with 27 digs defensively while Stek and Kratzer each had 16 assists.

Bloomsburg will be back on the road again next weekend as it heads to Davis & Elkins on Friday, September 20, to play Davis & Elkins and Alderson Broaddus and then travels to West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, September 21, for matches against Virginia Union and West Virginia Wesleyan.
