BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University field hockey team allowed three second-half goals and dropped a 3-0 decision to third-ranked East Stroudsburg University on Wednesday afternoon at Steph Pettit Stadium. The Huskies dropped to 0-4 on the season while the Warriors remained perfect as they improved to 6-0.
After a scoreless first half that saw East Stroudsburg hold a 9-1 advantage in shots and an 10-1 advantage in penalty corners, the visitors struck early in the third period when Celeste Veenstra notched her seventh goal of the season when she beat Bloomsburg freshman goalkeeper
Abby Shaffer (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) from the top of the circle. Jada Martin picked up the assist on Veenstra's goal just 2:06 into the second half. Veenstra scored her second of the game - and eighth of the year - just over nine minutes later when she one-timed a long pass into the circle from Lea Hughes past Shaffer.
Karly Conway provided the insurance in the 54th minute with her third goal of the season as she corralled a rebound off of a penalty corner and beat Shaffer who was scrambling for the loose ball. Becca Heffner was credited with the helper.
Shaffer, making her third consecutive start for the Huskies, played brilliantly in defeat as she was credited with nine saves despite falling to 0-3 overall. Maddie Richie earned the shutout for East Stroudsburg and did not have to make a save in the victory. She improved to 6-0 on the season.
Bloomsburg was limited to just one shot attempt on the afternoon which came from freshman
Carlee Williams (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) nine minutes into the contest. The Warriors, meanwhile, had 19 shot attempts (12 on goal) and held a 15-2 edge in penalty corners.
The Huskies return to Steph Pettit Stadium on Saturday, September 21, when they host Seton Hill University on Kids' Day. Start time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. All kids are invited to make posters and run out with the team prior to the contest and then the Huskies will stick around following the game to sign autographs. Hot dogs will also be provided for children who attend the game.
