Field Hockey Blanks Seton Hill, 5-0, For First Victory Of Season

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University field hockey team got a pair of goals from sophomore Foto Tsioles (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West), and a goal and an assist from both junior Emily Alker (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) and sophomore Madilyn McKay (Dover, Del./Polytech), as the Huskies broke out of an early-season offensive slump with a 5-0 victory over visiting Seton Hill University on Saturday afternoon at Steph Pettit Stadium. Bloomsburg earned its first win of the 2019 campaign as it improved to 1-4 overall. The Griffins, meanwhile, dropped to 0-4 on the year.

Entering the contest, the youthful Huskies had scored only two goals in their first four games of the season but broke out for five goals on Saturday with four of those coming in the second half.

Just under ten minutes into the contest, junior Cheyenne Ott (Mount Bethel, Pa./Bangor) took a pass from freshman Carlee Williams (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin), dribbled through a defender, and beat Seton Hill goalkeeper Elizabeth Armbruster between the legs for her first tally of the season. Williams' assist was the first point of her collegiate career. Ott's goal proved to be the only one of the opening half despite the Huskies holding a 15-1 edge in shots at the break.

Tsioles gave Bloomsburg some breathing room when she notched her second goal of the season midway through the third quarter to push the Huskies' advantage to 2-0. Tsioles took an initial shot that was stopped by Armbruster but was able to corral her own rebound and then beat the Seton Hill goalkeeper. Bloomsburg outshot Seton Hill, 7-1, in the third but still only had a two-goal lead heading to the fourth quarter.

The Huskies scored three times in a three-minute span late in the fourth for the final margin of victory. Tsioles buried her second goal of the game - third of the season - off of an assist from McKay at 56:36 to extend the advantage to 3-0. Junior Emily Alker (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) collected her first goal of the year at 58:11 to push the margin to 4-0 as freshman Sydney Derr (Fogelsville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) earned her first collegiate point with an assist on the goal. McKay then finished off the scoring with her first of the year with just 20 seconds left in regulation as Alker picked up the helper.

Bloomsburg finished the contest with a 31-4 advantage in shots and a 15-2 margin in penalty corners. Freshman Abby Shaffer (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) was credited with a pair of saves to earn her first career victory. She improved to 1-3 on the season. Junior Hannah Barnard (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) played the final three minutes of the contest in relief. On the flip side, Armbruster stopped 13 shots in defeat as she dropped to 0-4 on the year.

The Huskies will get right back to work as they entertain Frostburg State at Steph Pettit Stadium on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Frostburg State is in its first season as a Division II program.
