BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's tennis team opened its fall portion of the season over the weekend by hosting the Bloomsburg Invitational at the Burt Reese Tennis Center. The Huskies welcomed East Stroudsburg, Lock Haven, and Shippensburg to the tournament which also served as the coaching debut for new head coach
Rebecca Helt.
In the top flight of singles action, three of the four that made it through to the semifinals were Huskies. Senior
Cassidy Calimer (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Absegami) advanced with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Shippensburg's Maddy Reeves and then took care of East Stroudsburg's Marina Zardet by a 6-4, 6-1 score to advance to the finals.
On the other side of the bracket, senior
Taylor Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) defeated Quinn McClusky from East Stroudsburg in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, while senior
Vitoria Nery (Teresina, Piaui, Brazil/Educandário Santa Maria Goretti) won 6-0, 6-0 over Lock Haven's Hailey Risley. Capoferri and Nery squared off for a chance to meet Calimer in the finals and Capoferri prevailed in a hard-fought three-set win over Nery - 2-6, 7-5, 13-11. Capoferri used the momentum to knock off Calimer in the finals - 5-7, 7-6, 10-7.
Zardet ended up beating Nery in straight sets in the finals of the backdraw - 6-2, 6-2.
Like the top flight, the #2 singles flight had three Huskies in the semifinals. Junior
Giovanna Bonito (Pindamonhangaba, Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Reino) ran the table by winning all three of her matches in straight sets. She took care of Shippensburg's Kayla Tryanski in her opening match, 6-1, 6-0, and then downed East Stroudsburg's Aubri Stetina by the scores of 6-1, 6-2. In the finals, Bonito took down freshman teammate
Luana Bernardi (Aruja, Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Reino) - 7-6, 6-4.
Bernardi advanced to the finals with victories over Lock Haven's Jayna Brodnicki (6-0, 6-0) and freshman
Sarah Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) (6-1, 6-2) before falling in the finals. Capoferri knocked off East Stroudsburg's Amanda Jackson in her opening match, 6-1, 6-2, before losing to Bernardi.
Capoferri did win the backdraw finals match with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Stetina.
The Huskies had two more semifinalists in the #3 singles flight with junior
Isabella Sarquis (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Metodo) going on to defeat junior teammate
Devon DiCampli (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) by default in the finals. Sarquis advanced to the last match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Lock Haven's McCartney Register and a 6-1, 6-1 victory over East Stroudsburg's Ivanna Pittman. DiCampli moved on with wins over Bri Young of East Stroudsburg (6-2, 6-1) and Cally Papoutis from Shippensburg (6-1, 6-0).
In doubles action, Calimer and Nery teamed up to win the bracket as they eventually defeated Bonito and
Taylor Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) by a 6-2 score in the finals. Calimer and Nery defeated DiCampli and Sarquis, 6-0, and then knocked off the East Stroudsburg team of Zardet and McClusky by an identical 6-0 score to advance to the finals. Bonito and
Taylor Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) earned 6-0 wins over both Lock Haven's Register and Mushala, East Stroudsburg's Stetina and Jackson, and then Shippensburg's Tryanski and Islam.
DiCampli and Sarquis earned a 6-2 win over Simmons and Reeves of Shippensburg while Bernardi and
Sarah Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) lost their opening match, 7-6, to East Stroudsburg's Zardet and McClusky. Bernardi and
Sarah Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) did go on to win the backdraw after a 6-0 victory over Stetina and Jackson of East Stroudsburg and then a 7-5 win over DiCampli and Sarquis.
The Huskies are scheduled to play next at Chestnut Hill on Sunday, September 29.
