Quick Start Lifts Women's Soccer To 2-1 Victory At #21 East Stroudsburg Wednesday

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - Juniors Natalie Holmes (Laurel, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and Mackenzie Gebhardt (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) scored goals in the opening 12 minutes to lift the Bloomsburg University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at #21 East Stroudsburg on Wednesday evening at Eiler-Martin Stadium. The win was the fourth straight for the Huskies, who improved to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division. The Warriors, meanwhile, fell to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in divisional play.

Holmes gave the Huskies a 1-0 advantage just 7:21 into the contest with her second goal of the season - second in as many games - and then Gebhardt followed just over four minutes later with her third goal of the year to push the margin to 2-0. Gebhardt's goal was a header off of a corner kick taken by Holmes who collected her first assist of the year with the helper.

Bloomsburg held a 12-4 advantage in shots during the first half and also had a slight edge in corner kicks, 4-2.

Redshirt junior Jenna Hawkins (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) and the Huskies' defense made the early lead stand despite missing a shutout by 2:15 when Brienn Seaman notched her first goal of the year late in the 87th minute.

Bloomsburg finished the evening with a 20-10 margin in shots and an 8-6 edge in corner kicks. Hawkins improved to 6-1 on the year and was credited with a pair of saves in the victory. Mauri Jackson, who had allowed only one goal in her first five starts of the year, was saddled with the loss despite turning aside six shots. She dropped to 4-2 on the season.

With the win, the Huskies evened the season series against East Stroudsburg after the Warriors earned a 1-0 double overtime victory at Steph Pettit Stadium two weeks ago. It marks the fifth consecutive match between the two schools that has been decided by one goal.

The Huskies return home on Saturday, September 28, to entertain Lock Haven University at Steph Pettit Stadium. Bloomsburg will celebrate "Allie Barber (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) Day" as it will honor the great four-year career of Allie Barber (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) prior to opening kickoff which is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
