BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's soccer team kept rolling on Saturday afternoon as it won its fifth straight contest by blanking visiting Lock Haven University, 3-0, at Steph Pettit Stadium. The Huskies improved to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division while the Bald Eagles dropped to 1-3-1 overall and 1-3 in divisional play.
The match was scoreless until the 35th minute when Lock Haven was whistled for a hand ball infraction in the box which gave the Huskies a penalty kick opportunity. Junior
Lauren Hoelke (Blackwood, N.J./Highland Regional) took the shot and beat Bald Eagle goalkeeper Karly Trillhaase off the base of the crossbar and across the goal line for her fourth marker of the season. The tally proved to be the only goal of the first half as the Huskies outshot the Bald Eagles, 9-1, in the opening 45 minutes.
Junior
Maggie McDonald (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) extended Bloomsburg's advantage to 2-0 in the 55th minute when she received a drop pass from Hoelke and drilled a shot into the top left corner of the goal from roughly 30 yards out. The goal was McDonald's second of the season while the assist was Hoelke's fourth of the year.
Nine minutes later, in the 64th minute, sophomore
Nicole Varano (Mt. Carmel, Pa./Mt. Carmel) chipped a ball away from a Lock Haven defender on the right wing near midfield and then beat Trillhaase low and to the far side on a breakaway opportunity to provide the Huskies an insurance goal as the lead increased to 3-0. It was Varano's fourth goal of the season which ties her with Hoelke for the team lead in that category.
Redshirt junior
Jenna Hawkins (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) turned aside two Lock Haven shots to improve to 7-1 on the season. The shutout was her fourth of the season which moved her into a tie for second in the conference in that department and she now has 23 career shutouts - third on the school's all-time list. Hawkins trails only Amy Linn (1992-95), who holds the record with 27, and Frances Nicoletti (2008-11) who finished her career with 26.
Trillhaase dropped to 1-3-1 on the season with a five-save performance. The Huskies finished with an 18-7 edge in shots and a 6-3 margin in corner kicks.
