Box Score PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's tennis team opened the 2019 dual season on Sunday afternoon and rallied for an impressive 4-3 victory at Chestnut Hill College in a non-conference matchup. The dual was also the first in the Bloomsburg coaching career of Rebecca Helt who was hired to take over both the men's and women's programs after the retirement of Marty Coyne. The Griffins dropped to 4-2 on the season.

Bloomsburg opened by winning two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 advantage in the team score. Senior Taylor Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and junior Giovanna Bonito (Pindamonhangaba, Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Reino) teamed up for a 6-2 win at #2 while junior Isabella Sarquis (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Metodo) and freshman Luana Bernardi (Aruja, Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Reino) scored a 6-4 victory at #3.

However, the lead would be short-lived as the Griffins won the first three singles matches to take a 3-1 advantage. With the Huskies' backs against the wall, Bonito posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Nicole Yang at #4 to cut the deficit to 3-2. Bernardi followed with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Gianna Vassalluzzo at #5 to tie the match and then freshman Sarah Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) completed the rally by scoring a 6-0, 6-1 win against Mariana Sanchez at #6 to give Bloomsburg the season-opening victory.

Bloomsburg will host the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Singles and Doubles Championships next weekend at the Burt Reese Tennis Center. Action begins on Saturday, October 5, at 10:00 a.m. and will run through Monday, October 7.
