#5 Women's Soccer Blanks Edinboro, 3-0, To Open 2019 Campaign

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The fifth-ranked Bloomsburg University women's soccer team used three second-half goals to down the visiting Fighting Scots of Edinboro University, 3-0, on Thursday afternoon at Steph Pettit Stadium. The contest was the season opener for both teams.

Sophomore Nicole Varano (Mt. Carmel, Pa./Mt. Carmel) scored the Huskies' opening two goals less than two minutes apart early in the second half to give Bloomsburg a 2-0 advantage. Varano was able to notch her first marker when she headed a throw-in from junior Lauren Hoelke (Blackwood, N.J./Highland Regional) which beat Edinboro goalkeeper Anna Voelker in the 54th minute. Less than two minutes later, Varano received a pass from senior Megan Callan (Eldersburg, Md./Century) up the right wing and fired a low shot just inside the far post past Voelker to extend the Huskies' lead.

It marked the first multi-goal game of Varano's collegiate career after scoring two goals during the 2018 campaign. One of her two goals last season was Bloomsburg's only tally in the 3-1 NCAA Quarterfinal setback to eventual national champion Bridgeport last November.

Junior Maggie McDonald (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) ballooned the margin to 3-0 in the 66th minute when she blasted a shot from 30 yards out that beat Voelker just under the top left corner.

Redshirt junior Jenna Hawkins (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood), who broke the program's single-season record for shutouts with 13.5 last season, picked up where she left off as she stopped four Edinboro shots on the afternoon. Voelker was credited with seven saves in a losing effort for the Fighting Scots.

After a scoreless first half that saw the Huskies out-shoot Edinboro, 6-2, Bloomsburg found its offensive groove with 11 second-half attempts. The Huskies finished with a 17-6 advantage in shots and had four corner-kick opportunities to Edinboro's two - including a 3-0 margin in the second half.

The Huskies travel to Wilmington, Delaware on Saturday, September 7, for an out-of-conference matchup against the Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Bloomsburg will then return home on Wednesday night, September 11, against East Stroudsburg in a rematch of last year's PSAC Championship game. Kickoff from Steph Pettit Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
