Marsico Scores Twice; #5 Women's Soccer Blanks Goldey-Beacom, 3-0, Saturday

WILMINGTON, Del. - Junior Jamie Marsico (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) recorded the first multiple-goal game of her collegiate career as she helped lift the fifth-ranked Bloomsburg University women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory at Goldey-Beacom on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies improved to 2-0 on the young season while the Lightning dropped to 0-1-1.

It marked the second straight 3-0 victory to open the season for the Huskies and, like Thursday's season-opening win over Edinboro, all three Bloomsburg tallies came in the second half.

Sophomore Nicole Varano (Mt. Carmel, Pa./Mt. Carmel), who scored a pair of goals against the Fighting Scots in the opener, notched her third goal of the young season as she put Bloomsburg on the board in the 61st minute. Junior Lauren Hoelke (Blackwood, N.J./Highland Regional) played a ball into the box that bounced away from Goldey-Beacom goalkeeper Noel Talbot and ended up on the foot of Varano who was there to tap home the rebound.

Marsico then gave the Huskies some insurance as she scored twice in the span of just over six minutes to push Bloomsburg's advantage to 3-0. In the 73rd minute, senior Jessica Milligan (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) played a long pass ahead to Marsico who was able to beat Talbot low from about 12 yards out. The Milligan-Marsico duo connected again in the 79th minute as, once again, a long pass from Milligan was one-timed by Marsico for the game's final score.

Redshirt junior Jenna Hawkins (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) recorded her second shutout in as many games as she turned aside four shots to improve to 2-0 on the year. Talbot was credited with three saves in a losing effort for Goldey-Beacom.

Bloomsburg held a 16-6 advantage in shots and had nine corner kick opportunities to the Lightning's one.

The Huskies will return home on Wednesday night, September 11, against East Stroudsburg in a rematch of last year's PSAC Championship game. Kickoff from Steph Pettit Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
