SALEM, W. Va. - Senior
Tyler Madeira (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) scored a pair of goals to lift the Bloomsburg University men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory at Salem University on Friday afternoon in the season opener for both teams.
Madeira, who became the first Bloomsburg player to reach double figures in goals since 2015 a season ago, picked up where he left off as he put the Huskies on the board in the 24th minute off of a pass from junior
Kacper Grycel (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus). Then, in the 56th minute, the senior forward took advantage of a Tiger turnover inside of their defensive zone and chipped a shot over the head of Salem goalkeeper Luis Felipe Ramirez for his second goal of the game to extend the Huskies' advantage to 2-0. It marked the fourth career multiple-goal game for Madeira.
The Tigers cut the deficit in half at 2-1 in the 59th minute when Nicholas Collins beat Bloomsburg freshman goalkeeper
Nolan Michaels (Independence, Ohio/St. Vincent - St. Mary) who was making his first collegiate start. But, junior
Carter Luckenbaugh (York, Pa./Central York) gave the Huskies some insurance as he received a pass from senior
Mike Bazadona III (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) and beat Ramirez in the 70th minute to regain the two-goal lead.
Michaels earned his first collegiate victory as he registered one save while his counterpart, Ramirez, stopped two shots in a losing effort for the Tigers. Bloomsburg held a slim 15-13 edge in shot attempts for the match.
The Huskies remain on the road on Sunday, September 8, when they visit Shaw University. Kickoff against the Bears is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
