Men's Soccer Drops Overtime Decision At Shaw Sunday Afternoon

HTML BOX SCORE

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Bloomsburg University men's soccer team scored early but could not hang on as the Huskies dropped a 2-1 overtime decision at Shaw University on Sunday to even their record at 1-1 on the young season. Meanwhile, it was the Bears' season-opening contest.

Before fans even got comfortable in their seats, the Huskies were on the scoreboard as junior Carter Luckenbaugh (York, Pa./Central York) beat Shaw goalkeeper Theo Delaleu just 14 seconds into the contest to put Bloomsburg in front, 1-0. Freshman defender Stephen Hollis (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) recorded his first collegiate point with an assist on Luckenbaugh's second marker of the season. The junior entered the season with two goals in his first two seasons combined. Later in the opening half, senior Tyler Madeira (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland), who scored two goals in the season-opening victory at Salem on Friday, was inches away from giving the Huskies a two-goal advantage but his shot hit the post behind Delaleu which would prove to be the difference in the match.

Bloomsburg held a 10-6 shot advantage in the opening half and took a 1-0 lead into the break.

The Bears evened the match at a goal apiece in the 60th minute when Brandon Linares, off of an assist from Carl Kennedy, beat Bloomsburg freshman goalkeeper Nolan Michaels (Independence, Ohio/St. Vincent - St. Mary). Both teams had chances down the stretch, but neither could dent the scoreboard which forced overtime. Andre Matzuda gave the Bears the victory when he beat Michaels with just 31 seconds left in the first overtime period on what proved to be the only shot by either team in the extra session. Georgious Petousis was credited with the helper.

Despite the setback, the Huskies finished with a 21-14 advantage in shots and a 10-5 margin in corner kick opportunities. Michaels saw his record drop to 1-1 on the year as he was credited with a pair of saves in the losing effort. Delaleu turned aside five Bloomsburg shots in his first start of the campaign.

The Huskies will return to action on Wednesday, September 11, with a night contest at Bloomfield College. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
