Football Drops Season Opener Against Stonehill Saturday Afternoon

HTML BOX SCORE

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University football team could not generate much in the way of offense on Saturday afternoon as it dropped a 33-14 decision to visiting Stonehill College in front of nearly 2,600 fans at Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium. The contest was the season opener for both teams.

Redshirt senior running back Qmac Quiteh (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) scored Bloomsburg's lone offensive touchdown - a six-yard burst into the endzone late in the first quarter which, at the time, knotted the game at 7-7. However, the Skyhawks went on to score the next 26 points - 17 in the second quarter - to blow the game open. Junior linebacker Aaron Trumino (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) capped off the scoring with his first collegiate touchdown as he picked off Stonehill quarterback Anton Stoneking and returned it 13 yards for a score early in the fourth quarter.

Stonehill played keep away for a majority of the afternoon as it ran 78 offensive plays and held the ball for more than 36 minutes. The Huskies, meanwhile, ran just 44 plays on offense and held the ball for less than 16 minutes over the final three quarters after an even opening stanza. The Skyhawks finished with 466 yards of total offense (290 passing, 176 rushing) while Bloomsburg mustered just 168 (116 rushing, 52 passing) on the afternoon.

The visitors started the scoring when Andrew Jamiel hauled in an 11-yard pass from Stoneking to cap off a 10-play, 69-yard game-opening drive. Matt Haite tacked on the extra point to give the Skyhawks a 7-0 advantage. Bloomsburg answered when Quiteh scored the first Huskies' touchdown of the season with 45 seconds left in the opening quarter and, after sophomore Cameron Shollenberger (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area) booted the extra point, the game was tied at 7-7. The touchdown capped off Bloomsburg's best drive of the day as the Huskies drove 71 yards on nine plays, aided by a 17-yard run by senior running back Alex Gooden (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara) and a 13-yard scamper from redshirt freshman quarterback Logan Leiby (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area). Stonehill's defense stiffened the rest of the day as it allowed 97 yards on Bloomsburg's other 35 plays over the course of the contest.

Stonehill scored 17 points in the second quarter to take a 24-7 advantage into the locker room at halftime. Greg Powell started the scoring with a 16-yard touchdown run with 12:05 left in the first half and Haite added the extra point to give the Skyhawks a 14-7 lead. Powell then hooked up with DeAaron Lawrence on a 43-yard touchdown strike nine minutes later with Haite tacking on the extra point to push the margin to 21-7. Haite capped off the scoring with a 32-yard field goal at the buzzer for the final points of the opening half.

Haite started the scoring in the second half as he drilled a 31-yard field goal with 10:41 left in the third quarter to give the visitors a 27-7 advantage. Then, in the fourth, Jamiel caught his second touchdown pass of the afternoon - a 22-yard strike from Powell - with 14:10 left to give the Skyhawks a 33-7 lead after Haite missed the extra point. Trumino got the Huskies back in the endzone with 11:19 left in regulation which cut the deficit to 33-14 after Shollenberger's point after. But, Bloomsburg generated just 13 total yards on its final two drives and could get no closer on the scoreboard.

Leiby completed 12-of-20 for 52 yards as the Stonehill defense blanketed the Huskies' wide receivers all afternoon. In fact, Leiby's longest completion of the day went for nine yards to senior Michael Allen (Oley, Pa./Fleetwood) midway through the first quarter. The young quarterback did, however, show a tremendous ability to scramble as he finished as the Huskies' leading rusher with 47 yards on nine carries. Gooden toted the ball six times for 40 yards while Quiteh added 29 yards on nine carries. Allen caught four passes for 23 yards.

Powell and Stoneking split dutied under center for Stonehill and they combined to complete 19-of-25 for 290 yards and three touchdowns. Jamiel had a huge afternoon, hauling in nine passes for 129 yards and two scores. On the ground, Justin Felder led the way with 73 yards on 19 carries while Brian Kearns, Jr., chipped in 61 yards on 21 totes.

Defensively, the Huskies had tremendous games from Trumino and junior Alex Findura (Stockbridge, Ga./Woodland). Findura posted a career-high 12 total tackles (seven solo), two tackles for a loss, and a pass breakup from his defensive end position. Meanwhile, Trumino made his first collegiate start and had a career-high 10 tackles, one tackle for a loss, and the pick-six. Redshirt sophomore Tyshaun Pollard (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) added nine stops for the Huskies. Lloyd King led Stonehill with six total tackles.

Bloomsburg will look to rebound next Saturday, September 14, when it travels to Edinboro University to battle the Fighting Scots at Sox Harrison Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
