BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The ninth-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team finally took the field for real on Sunday afternoon but dropped a 2-1 overtime decision against visiting Bellarmine University in the Huskies' season opener at Steph Pettit Stadium. The Knights, who played at East Stroudsburg on Saturday afternoon, improved to 1-1 on the young campaign.
Bellarmine's Lindsay Reynolds spoiled the Huskies' debut when she tipped home a shot past junior goalkeeper
Hannah Barnard (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) with 3:17 left in the first overtime to send the Knights back home to Louisville, Kentucky, with a weekend split. Bellarmine was awarded a penalty corner with Reynolds inserting to Alex Hill at the top of the circle. Hill went right back to Reynolds at the left side of the cage and the tip got past Barnard for the game-winner.
The visitors opened the scoring midway through the second quarter when Hill notched her first goal of the season with 7:24 left in the first half. Hill took a shot from the goal line that somehow ricocheted off the back of the pads of Barnard and into the back of the cage. Bloomsburg bounced back with 10:59 left in regulation when sophomore
Foto Tsioles (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) tipped an outlet pass from senior
Rachael Strockbine (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) which beat Bellarmine goalkeeper Heather Gregory to even the score at a goal apiece.
The goal from Tsioles puts her halfway to her total goal output from a season ago.
The Huskies had plenty of chances as they owned a majority of the scoring opportunities throughout the contest. Bloomsburg had 26 shot attempts and 22 penalty corner opportunities while the Knights were held to eight shots and eight penalty corners.
Barnard was credited with five saves while Gregory turned aside nine Bloomsburg shots to earn the victory.
The Huskies will be back in action on Wednesday, September 11, when they head to second-ranked West Chester for a non-conference matchup against the Golden Rams. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
