Men's Basketball Suffers 83-71 Setback To Millersville Saturday Afternoon

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Senior Ky Mauras (Reading, Pa./Reading) scored 21 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and had a game-high four steals, but it wasn't enough as the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team dropped an 83-71 decision to visiting Millersville University on Saturday afternoon at the Nelson Field House. The loss snapped the Huskies' modest two-game winning streak as they fell to 7-8 overall and 4-5 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division standings. Millersville, meanwhile, moved to 8-7 overall and 5-4 in the PSAC East.

Mauras went 7-of-16 from the field and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the foul line en route to his fourth 20-point effort of the season and his second consecutive such output. Mauras also led the Huskies with three assists and four steals while tying for the team lead with seven rebounds. Freshman Justin Anderson (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) was the only other Bloomsburg player in double figures as he finished with 13 pounds while adding six rebounds.

The teams played through six ties and two lead changes in the opening half as the back-and-forth stanza ended with the Marauders holding a slim 36-32 edge.

Bloomsburg built up a seven-point margin, 24-17, with 8:51 left in the first half after redshirt senior Sam Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) knocked down a jumper. The Marauders answered with a 13-2 run as they turned the seven-point deficit into a four-point advantage, 30-26, with 3:05 remaining in the opening twenty minutes. The Huskies cut the lead to one on two separate occasions in the closing minutes, but a triple from Millersville's James Sullivan provided the visitors with its four-point margin at intermission.

Mauras had eight points and five rebounds in the first half while sophomore Travis Elmore (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) chipped in with seven points.

Millersville never trailed in the second half as it built up an 11-point lead, 54-43, with 12:12 left in regulation before the Huskies made one last effort at a comeback. Bloomsburg countered with a 7-0 run over the next two minutes to trim the deficit to four, 54-50, with ten minutes remaining. Mauras started the rally with the Huskies' first triple of the afternoon, and then redshirt junior Max Wagner (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) hit a jumper and knocked down a pair of foul shots on successive possessions to close the spurt.

But, the Mauraders used another run to pull away as they scored nine of the game's next eleven points to retake an 11-point edge, 63-52, with 5:30 left in regulation and the Huskies could not recover. Bloomsburg got no closer than seven over the closing minutes as the Marauders went 8-for-10 at the foul line down the stretch to keep the Huskies at bay.

Elmore finished the afternoon with nine points while Wagner added eight points and seven rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench.

Bloomsburg started the game by going 9-of-11 from the field but ended going 18 of its last 52 attempts to finish 27-of-63 (42.9%) for the afternoon. The Huskies were just 3-of-16 (18.8%) from deep - 1-of-13 until redshirt junior Peyton Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) came off the bench to hit a pair of triples late in the contest. Bloomsburg was 14-of-19 (73.7%) from the charity stripe.

Millersville had five players in double figures led by Khari Williams' 24 points. The Marauders shot 32-of-62 (51.6%) from the field, 3-of-11 (27.3%) from long range, and 16-of-21 (76.2%) from the line. The Marauders also held a 39-33 edge in rebounding with Millersville's Brandon Craig finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.

The Huskies will look to bounce back on Wednesday, January 15, when they head to Shippensburg University for a PSAC Eastern Division contest against the Raiders. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
