BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Freshman
Justin Anderson (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) poured in a career-high 30 points, and senior
Ky Mauras (Reading, Pa./Reading) tied a career-best with 28 points as the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team posted an impressive 102-89 victory over 22nd-ranked West Chester University on Saturday afternoon at the Nelson Field House. The Huskies, who snapped a four-game losing skid, improved to 8-11 overall and 5-8 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division standings while the Golden Rams dropped to 14-5 overall and 8-5 in the division. West Chester, after a 13-0 start, has lost five of its last six games.
Sophomore
Travis Elmore (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) added 21 points - his second 20-point effort of the season - and seven rebounds as the trio combined for 79 of the team's 102 points on the afternoon. The 102 points were a season-high for the Huskies, surpassing the 101 they scored against Chestnut Hill in a 101-88 win at the Nelson Field House back on November 19.
Anderson, whose previous high was 28 points at Wilmington University on December 16, added four rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and two steals. Mauras, meanwhile, reached 28 points for the third time in his career and chipped in eight assists, five rebounds, a block, and a steal in the victory.
Bloomsburg led nearly wire-to-wire as the visitors held the lead for just 2:40 and never led by more than two points on the afternoon.
After West Chester scored the first points of the day, the Huskies went on an 8-0 run to take an 8-2 lead with 17:33 left in the first half. Mauras, Anderson, Elmore, and redshirt junior
Max Wagner (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) each had buckets during the spurt. Following a Golden Rams' timeout, West Chester outscored Bloomsburg, 15-8, over the next four minutes to take a 17-16 lead with 13:22 left in the opening stanza. However, back-to-back triples from Mauras and Anderson gave the Huskies a 22-17 advantage - a lead they would build to as many as seven with 7:49 left in the first half before the Golden Rams battled back. West Chester took a 43-42 lead with 3:48 left before a three-pointer from Anderson gave the Huskies the lead for good with 3:22 remaining in the opening twenty minutes.
Bloomsburg eventually took a 50-47 lead into the locker room at halftime as Anderson had 16 of his 30 points at the break.
The Huskies came out firing in the second half as they scored the first eight points to take their largest lead of the game - 58-47 - with 17:33 left in regulation. Mauras started the run with a triple, which was followed by a three-point play from Elmore. Wagner then closed the spurt with a layup to force the Golden Rams to take a timeout. Following the stoppage, West Chester answered with a 10-2 run of its own to cut the Huskies' lead to 60-57 with 15 minutes remaining.
That, however, would be as close as the visitors would get the rest of the way. The game remained close, but the Huskies eventually worked the lead back up to twelve - 85-73 - with 5:47 remaining. West Chester pulled to within six, 87-81, after an 8-2 run but a pair of free throws from Elmore, and a layup from Mauras pushed the margin back to ten with 2:09 remaining. Again, the visitors would get to within six, 95-89, with 1:16 left, but the Huskies closed out the contest in strong fashion by scoring the final seven points for the 13-point victory.
Mauras, who had seven points in the first half, had 21 in the second half, thanks in part to a 12-of-14 performance at the charity stripe over the final 20 minutes. Anderson had 14 in the second half while Elmore added 12 as the trio combined for 47 of the team's 52 points after halftime.
Redshirt junior
Peyton Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) had nine points off the bench - all in the first half - which came on three three-pointers. Wagner had six points and a game-high 13 rebounds while junior
Maqi Watson (Philadelphia, Pa./Mathematics, Civics, and Sciences Charter) had five points and five rebounds. Freshman
Justin Rodriguez (Easton, Pa./Morristown-Beard) accounted for the other three points for the Huskies.
Bloomsburg shot 32-of-67 (47.8%) from the floor and 8-of-20 (40.0%) from long range on the day. Elmore was 7-of-10 shooting while Mauras was 7-of-12. The Huskies did a lot of damage at the foul line, where they went 30-of-39 (76.9%). The Mauras, Anderson, Elmore trio combined to shoot 28-of-36 (77.8%) at the stripe. West Chester, meanwhile, was 31-of-84 (36.9%) from the field and 10-of-33 (30.3%) from deep. The Golden Rams went 17-of-21 (81.0%) from the stripe.
Josh Samec paced the Golden Rams with 20 points and 10 rebounds. The PSAC's leading scorer, Robbie Heath, had 18 points but was 6-of-21 from the field and 1-of-7 from long distance.
Bloomsburg will look to string back-to-back wins together when it heads to Kutztown University on Wednesday, January 29. Action gets underway at 7:30 p.m.
